[OT, Movies] Saw the trailer for Episode II last night . . .

whining in Star Wars...

Only one quote necessary:

"But I was going into Tashi station to pick up some power converters!"

C'mon guys, as if Luke didn't do his share of whining in Ep. 4. There is no reason to believe the two lines quoted come in the same sequence in the film. And we already KNOW there are going to be developing hostilities between Anakin and Obi-Wan.

I'm no Lucas apologist -- if I hear "ex-squeeze me" ONCE in Ep. 2, I'm gonna demand my money back. But really, to complain about the above lines because they come out of Anakin's mouth (who already coined the lines "YIPPEE!" and "Now THIS is pod racing!") is jumping the gun a bit, don't you think? Especially since Luke wasn't much different at the same age.

Let go.

My issues are thus, (and only based on the largest of the three previews for the film, of which I have seen far too many times to be considored healthy... remember I'm a cinema projectionist), are that the guy playing Anakin, coupled with the bad script, has produced a character that is seeming very forced. Judging from what I've seen, this guy cannot act. But then again, the big G can't direct either, so it's probably a perfect match. :(

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Hayden Christiansen nominated for an academy award for his role in "Life as a House"? Not that the academy is any indication of acting talent...

BTW, please forward me a copy of the script. I'd like to see how bad it is. To date, the only substantial info I've seen has come from Ain't-It-Cool news and that was far from a complete script.

I was a lot different back in the days when I first saw Star Wars--a lot more blinded by the wonderous aspects of the film and oblivious to its weaknesses. I was young and lines like Luke's didn't bother me in the least. Although I recognize now that the lines were pathetic, I still enjoy the films because of nostalgia, mainly. But I don't have to enjoy the new films. In fact, honestly I didn't enjoy the first one. I expect to not enjoy the second one either.

I saw the trailor when I saw Lord of the Rings a couple weeks ago. Man, it's more of a love story than anything else. Yeah, yeah, that cheesy love story has always been there, but it has always taken a back stage to everything else... now it seems Epi II is ONLY a love story. A good 90% of the trailor was about how much Anakin loved her, and they couldn't love each other, blah blah blah. Then they added in like 10-15 seconds of exploding things just to make it have a resemblance of Star Wars. I was uninterested by Epi I, but Episode II just completely ruined whatever faith I had in Lucas.

I think you're all being a bit stupid to judge the whole of a film by it's trailer. You take short snippets of any of the original three films and you could make an iffy looking trailer. For that matter, you could take clips of any film and make a trailer that look rubbish.

Watch the film, then form your opinion of it. Not before

Let's face cold, hard reality, boys and girls. THE MAGIC IS GONE. I've lost all respect for Lucas as an artist. If Georgie couldn't realize what a boring piece of trash Phantom Menace was, then he's truly on the road to senility.

As far as I'm concerned, the problems began when he rereleased the original trilogy a few years back. He irritatingly decided to rewrite history during Han Solo's encounter with the bounty hunter, Greedo (Star Wars; Episode 4). This irks me. In the original Star Wars, Greedo tries to capture Han Solo and give him to Jabba the Hut, who will doubtlessly give Greedo a handsome reward. Han decides not to be a victim. IN THE ORIGINAL STAR WARS....HAN SHOOTS GREEDO DEAD. Why leave yourself to the dubious mercy of some filthy, bloodthirsty mercenary? In the re-release, some 20 odd years later.....we are "treated" with a mamby-pamby, politically correct REWRITE of history. In this REMAKE, Greedo shoots at Han Solo first after Han utters those classic lines......

"Over my dead body."

I might have the lines wrong, but I doubt it. Greedo shoots at Han Solo........and MISSES. He misses from SIX FEET AWAY. Han doesn't even move. He just swings his pistol up and fires. BAM! No more Greedo. How could Greedo miss? Did he take a retard pill that morning? Maybe he closed his eyes, and said...

"George Lucas really hates me."

I suppose Georgie didn't want Han Solo to seem like some cold-blooded outlaw or pirate. Whatever. Han wasn't stupid. If he didn't shoot first, Greedo would've taken him to Jabba the Hutt, who I'll bet would've tortured him MERCILESSLY before finally KILLING him. When someone points a gun at you, and they have obvious malicious intent, and you have a gun of your own......YOU JUST DON'T PLAY PATTYCAKE WITH 'EM. You shoot first, then clean up the mess later. You don't do this out of maliciousness, or out of spite. You do this to survive.

In the re-release of the trilogy, Han meets up with Jabba the Hutt. This was not in the original trilogy. Jabba looks smaller, bloopier, and whimpier. He lets Han push him around a little. This Jabba is not like the Jabba we know and love. Lucas, what are you thinking?!

It is not merely the stupidity of these situations that vexes me. Georgie REWROTE HISTORY. If I rewrote everything in all the Bibles in the world, and then proceeded to burn all the old ones, wouldn't that be UNETHICAL? I'm no religious fanatic, but that would still be wrong.

If I changed the video on the Kennedy assassination, would that perhaps be a trifle...unethical?

I'm not a Star Wars fanatic like some folks out there, but even I recognize artistic integrity. If Lucas ever had it, it's vanished like a fart in the breeze.

Star Wars is not merely a "movie". It's an institution. An American icon. Hell, it's a billion dollar industry. I don't have to be a Star Wars nut to know that. Anyone from anything resembling a semi-advanced nation knows what Star Wars is. That probably means that at least a couple billion people have seen at least one of the Star Wars movies. This is out of the many billions of people who have lived from 1977 to today. Countless people, including me, grew up on Star Wars, watched the movies, played the video games, dueled with the toy light sabres, played with the action figures, and loved every minute of it. And now....the institution lives....but it's become something less. How many books or movies have referred to Star Wars in one form or another? More than you or I will ever know.

I could go into excruciating detail on why Phantom Menace was a dismal failure EVEN THOUGH IT MADE TONS OF MONEY. But if I did that, it would be like providing you with a detailed autopsy for a grisly murder. Why ruin your lunch?

Wow, I was wondering what my problem was lately. I've been having trouble teaching class and reading and doing the most simple things, like brushing my teeth. Now eye no--eye yam stoopid! :o

I'm not just judging the movie by its trailing. I'm judging it by Episode I and by things I've heard George Lucas say, and just from details about the movies that have been released so far. I just don't care about it any more. If it's a brilliant film, then more power to Mr. Lucus. I could care less about it, though.

Ok, ok, sorry. Stupid was the wrong word, I appologise :o But I still think you should hold judgement until after you've seen the film.

I haven't formed an opinion on the movie yet (since it indeed has not been released yet). I have formed an opinion about the dialogue in the trailer. And perhaps the lines would be more convincing if another actor uttered them, but I don't think so. I have always been willing to give Hayden Christiansen a chance (hell, I was ready to give Leonardo a chance, but thank God I don't have to). I was even impressed that he was nominated for a Golden Globe for best supporting actor. That's more than any of the big 3 from the original trilogy have ever gotten.

You know what, I just realized I've got my thinking all screwed on bass ackwards. Episode I was such a letdown partly because I had expectation that had reached lunar level. Now that my expectations have been sh*t on for Episode II, maybe it will actually be wonderful! See how much more positive I am when I take my medicine!:D :D :D

(On the other hand, low expectations didn't help the D&D movie out any. And my expectations for LOTR:FOTR were way higher than for Episode I, and it met all of them. Thank God and Peter Jackson that we do have TTT and ROTK to look forward to.)
