[OT, Movies] Saw the trailer for Episode II last night . . .

I have to say that I hold little hope for Episode II: Attack of the Clones. (The title is hideous. Please, PLEASE, let this be a false working title. ARGH!!)

If the portrayal of the trailer is accurate, all I can do is thank Heaven for Peter Jackson.

Please, no more Jar Jar Binks. I find him offensive and useless as a character. Did C-3PO wine? Yes? Could he get things done, other than by fortuitious accident? Yes?

I suspect that even if the film is horrific, it will still make money. Ah, Hollywood.

I guess that must be me. I'd better give up teaching English right now. Just to be sure, I might want to sever my vocal cords and snip off my fingers. I wouldn't want to accidentally communicate.

Seriously, I think that all of Yoda's lines were great...marvelous...classic. Of course, he himself didn't have a great grasp of word order, but that's part of what makes his lines so memorable. Vadar also had some great lines ("Apology accepted.") You can't reasonably argue that all the dialogue in the Original Trilogy was bad.

Conversely, what has Episode I given us? "Yippee"?

You did see the big ":D" I included, right?

But I'll admit, I wasn't clear. I didn't mean the movies had no good dialog. Just that the quality of the dialog overall was less than stellar.

Don't get me wrong, I love the original SW trilogy. But I love it inspite of the scripts in many places, not because of it.

Okay, I feel like I'm pissing into the wind here, but I have to try...

The love story in Ep II, from what I've read in script reviews, is an important part of the story but by no means an overwhelming part of it.

The "romantic" trailer was one of three Ep II trailers that have been released. Why judge only by the last one? The other two were far more action-oriented.

Just because I'm criticising the romance as depicted in the trailer, dont think its because I think it has no place in a SW film. I really like the concept, but lets just say I'm unimpressed with whats been shown in the trailer.

As for judging more action oriented stuff, well the action didnt seem extraordinarily awesome or poor thus I didnt comment on it either way.

And as far as dialog is concerned, show me someone who thinks the original trilogy had good dialog, and I'll show you someone who lacks a solid grasp on the English language. :D

I wouldnt say the original trilogy had great dialog and writing, but TPM and what we've seen of AOTC seems substantially poorer.

Although the original Star Wars had bland dialog overall, there were gems in there like Wolfspider says. Possibly my favorite is

"I don't believe it."
"That... is why you fail."

and

"Don't worry about it, that's my friend Han down their, he'll have that shield down on time... or this will be the shortest offensive of all time."

Anyway, aside from the miserable dialog and child-acting, what I found offensive about Episode 1 was how it was ONLY had themes that are aimed for kids (no offense SOMFS ;)). I know Star Wars 4-6 had R2-D2, C-3P0 and the Ewoks, but it also had the adult themes of Luke's struggle to learn the force without becoming tempted and the redemption of Darth Vader, plus the good old all-ages epic stuggle between good and evil. And C-3P0 provided many of the better lines in the movies! TPM has Jar-Jar (cheap comedy based on total silliness and clumsiness) and a kid who seems to solve everything by accident. Yay!

Also, I can't figure out what people have against the ewoks. Sure they looked cute, and their language was kind of odd, but they acted like real people, with an interesting society and the smarts to take on a stormtrooper battalion (some people say it's garbage to have the primitive ewoks beat the stormtroopers, but their only frontal assualt, the initial arrow storm, only kills about a half-dozen. Instead they succeed a sowing complete confusion, as the stormtroopers are divided and led into various traps, along with the help of the rebels that the stormtroopers captured).

So yes, the trailer looks miserable, and the movie will probably be the same. I'll probably still see it in theaters, but I'll definitely boycott it at least a week. I guess we might be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I you keep your hopes down the chances of a pleasant surprise are increased. ;)

*shrug* I think the trailer looked fine.

Ep I was okay. I can say I liked it. Not loved it, but did like it. It's the first piece in the puzzle and is setting up a lot of stuff, so there didn't seem to be much to it... I do feel that there are undercurrents though sadly they didn't surface enough to really make an impact.

I liked LotR a lot... but I didn't think it was way past my expectations. *shrug*

There is a shot of a heap of clones boarding a ramp. They don't really come into play until the end, although the film is about them.

Darkness, it’s good to see that I’m not the only one. I’m sure we could survive the onslaught… right? Ahem… right?

From the script I've read the film actually has some fantastic ideas. There wasn't much dialogue of course, but there were some heavy details on a lot of scenes. I think this may have actually helped formulate my opinion on it, because when I read it I was visualising how I would do it. How I would direct it, act it out, and design it. It's what I do. It's in my sig. And then I saw the preview which included a couple of things that weren't in the pieced together synopsis I read… mainly a lot of pouting from the lead, and I got worried for it. You’re right of course, it probably isn’t Hayden’s fault, and it is actually to do with the directing. And you’re also right, I am judging an entire film as being bad from one preview. But isn’t judging a film from a preview what we are supposed to do? Isn’t that what previews are for, so we can judge whether we’re going to see it or not? If this film didn’t have the Star Wars logo, I’m not sure I’d be looking all that forward to it. But of course, I will see the film as soon as I can and if we get it in early I’ll beg to tech screen a print. But I am worried for it. I’m not saying it will be bad, I’m just saying I’m worried it will be.

Oh yeah… the script synopsis is no longer on the web… they were all taken down a couple of months ago. I’m sure someone here still has a copy downloaded though.

Ok, ok, sorry. Stupid was the wrong word, I appologise But I still think you should hold judgement until after you've seen the film.
Applause for Jarval. I have to start copying some of this down to see if everyones opinion is the same after seeing the movie.:)
