D&D 5E Out of the Abyss IC

Raza Thulcandra

Where Kago goes, so follows Raza. First, she casts Produce Flame to give herself some light then hurries after until she is only a step behind the orc warrior. As they approach the door she reaches out and touches him and lets healing energy flow into him.

"Who knows what might be in there. Best to be at full strength."

OOC: I don't see where Kamael removed the caltrops he shoved under the door. Last I read in the OOC, he proposed doing it, but hasn't declared so in the IC. I think they're still in place.

Brinn tried the door but the caltrops wedged beneath it by Kamael had been shoved in tightly. Brinn got the door open a hair, then it wouldn't budge. He closed it and kicked the caltrops out of the way. Trying the door a second time, it creaked open, its hinges crying in agony into the darkened interior room. Light from Kamael's spell flooded the interior space, revealing a room fifteen feet across and twenty feet long. Brinn spied a door to the north that opened to a small ten foot square closet. Both spaces had natural stone flooring and walls of poorly hewn natural stone. Brinn's eyes fell on a line of four skeletons all sitting upright and immobile against the far wall; dead men, long since rotted. Pitted short swords lay in their laps or rested at their sides. Their armor was leather covered in mold from the damp of the stream. A shield, however, lay intact at the feet of one skeleton. Nothing stirred in the room.

Across the stream, Jimjar climbed up to the top of the earthen berm. Shuushar answered Raza's question about fish in the stream with a sorrowful shake of his head. "I think not. The waters are frigid, too frigid. Some say a sorceress lay a spell on them many years ago. They flow from a surface range, and by the time they reach us here in the Night Below, they are twice as cold as the glacier from which they spring, if such a thing is possible. Fish like them not. Other things, however, like them very well." The kuo-toa cast a wary look at the stream, then ambled north a bit and peered off to the northeast. Turvey bolted into the closet and busied himself with feeling his way around its perimeter. In short order, Kago and Raza followed after Solace. Multiple light-producing spells brightly lit the closet and star room. For her part, Solace strayed inside the star room. She eyed a pair of runes splashed in red streaks on the side walls flanking the doorway that led from the star room to the short corridor.

OOC: Intelligence (Arcana) DC 14 to identify the meaning of the runes.

Raza Thulcandra

Raza acknowledged Shuushar's explanation of the water with a nod. When she saw the interior of the room with the strange symbols and markings she frowned. This was dark magic and she did not particularly care for other practitioners of dark magic.

"This looks like Kamael's expertise. I'll fetch him."

Raza left the room and exited out to the bridge where she had last seen Kamael and Brinn. She eyed the bridge but didn't cross. Instead she called across to any she could see. "We've found something and need Kamael's advice."

Kamael flinched upon seeing, past Brinn, the other skeletons; then relaxed once he realised they were inanimate.

After Brinn had finished desecrating the dead, Kamael joined him in searching the rooms, until he heard Raza's calls.

Enlisting the help of both Raza and Brinn, he used his rope to cross the stream, remembering to pick up the caltrops that had been wedged in the door.

"Fascinating!", he exclaimed as he entered the hidden room with the arcane symbols. "I've heard stories of such symbols but never seen one before."

He glanced apologetically at Raza, "I'm afraid I've never had any formal training, but let me see if my mystic senses are able to intuit anything. If I should be possessed, I hope you and the orc have the necessary knowledge to exorcise any evil spirit..."

Kamael searched the eastern rooms and found nothing other than desecrated bones and an intact shield. Both Kamael and a Stool-laden Brinn re-crossed the stream, this time with the help of a rope. Neither had any difficulty in crossing. Once Kamael regained the west bank, he gazed at the eight-pointed star etched in the floor--a compass rose--and at the two red-splashed runes on the walls. The runes, he thought, were for travel and protection. The compass rose was a teleportation circle.

Raza Thulcandra

Raza stared at the teleportation circle, as Kamael described it. She had no idea how such a thing worked; it was not magics that the Mother Night made use of. She could see its use but now she wanted to rest. Forced inactivity then the strenuous march had worn her out and her bones ached and she hungered and she felt a fool for trying to eat salted fish without any sort of preparation.

"Enough of this! We need rest: my bones aren't as young as they used to be and Stool is wilting on his stalks. Find me something to heat water in and something to keep a fire going. We'll have fish stew by morning with any luck. But point the way to where we will camp first."
