D&D 5E Out of the Abyss IC

Round 2

An earthen hand broke free of the sandstone floor of the passageway and formed twixt Kuo-toa 2 and Kuo-toa 7. The hand reached out, grabbed hold of Kuo-toa 7, and squeezed, dealing 10 points of damage. The kuo-toa held in the hand's grasp gasped for air and struggled mightily, its feet kicking and its hands flailing. The creature turned mottled purple as its windpipe was crushed.

The kuo-toa monitor flung to the passageway floor by Brinn stood up and lunged at Raza, biting her for 6 points of piercing damage. The monitor ripped its maw free from Raza, blood dripping from razored teeth, and moved to attack Kamael. Kamael saw the monitor reaching for him, and reacted automatically by casting shield. The monitor's attack, however, overpowered Kamael's shield; the creature punched Kamael in the solar plexus, dealing 6 points of bludgeoning and 2 points of lightning damage. The smell of ozone lay heavy on the air as lightning crackled brilliantly in Solace's dim light. The monitor followed with a second punch that connected, dealing another 3 points of bludgeoning damage to Kamael.

Kuo-toa 5 darted up the stairs leading to the ledge and bit at Brinn, but missed. Kuo-toa 1 followed suit, snaking up the stairs and jabbing at Brinn with its spear, but missing.

Kuo-toa 4 darted around the back side of the earthen hand and flung a spear at Kago, but missed, mainly because Kago benefitted from partial cover from Kuo-toa 7 (who was grappled). Kuo-toa 3 extracted a net and flung it at Kago, but missed. The net landed harmlessly at Kago's feet. Kuo-toa 2 attempted the same feat, and had better luck, hitting Kago with the net and entangling him.



OOC: Maximillian's earthen grasp is in the grimoire, if that helps. I checked my PHB and don't see that there's non-lethal damage in 5e. I don't mind, however, to rule on the fly that earthen grasp deals non-lethal damage to the kuo-toa it grabs hold of. The kuo-toa can fall unconscious/pass out at 0 hp instead of dying. We'll roll with that until we find something definitive in either the PHB or DMG. If someone comes across a page cite for non-lethal damage, ping me. [MENTION=33284]Yavathol[/MENTION], I need a Constitution saving throw DC 10 for Kamael to maintain concentration on Maximillian's earthen grasp. I also need you to roll a Wild Magic surge check for Kamael's having cast shield. Due to the lightning damage, Kamael will be unable to take a Reaction until the end of the monitor's next turn.

Kago's turn, [MENTION=23298]industrygothica[/MENTION]! Kago is restrained by Kuo-toa 2's net. The restrained condition is detailed on PHB 292 (0 speed, attacks against you have advantage, your attacks have disadvantage, and disadvantage on Dex saves). Kago can use his Action to make a Strength DC 10 check to attempt to free himself.

Re: non-lethal damage: phb p198 when an attacker reduces a creature to 0hp with a melee attack, the attacker can knock the creature out. The attacker can make this choice the instant the damage is dealt.

The spell description does not use the term melee attack so I suspect technically I don't have this option, however it is a physical attack doing physical damage so flavor wise it seems reasonable to allow it, unlike trying, say, scorching ray!

Kamael strained to maintain focus on Maximilian's earthen grasp even as the kuo-toa monitor pummeled him, and was able to do so. The effort was supreme and cost him something to maintain.
 


Shuushar frowned at the net-covered Kago. He hesitated, his eyes on the other kuo-toa for a moment, then crossed over and tried to help Kago free himself. "A dagger would help cut through it, but I haven't one." Seeing Kamael be pummeled by the kuo-toa monitor, Shuushar raised his voice so the others might hear him. His tone was louder, uncharacteristic of him. "Their leader is strong, well-trained in combat, and unlikely to yield. They must be worried, indeed, to spare one of his talent for patrol."

Turvey, realizing the griffin grease would not soon be extinguished, reached down and grabbed the orb. The glass ball was still intact but must have been hot; the little deep gnome juggled the orb back and forth between gnarled hands, huffing forcibly.

Raza felt this was, most likely, a losing battle. Yet she wouldn't retreat without Kago. She moved across the cavern along the ledge to reach the orc. Drawing her dagger she began sawing away at the ropes that entangled him.

I'll be collecting my child from the airport at 8 pm tonight, so it'll be either late tonight or tomorrow morning before I post. Solace draws the rapier in her right hand, conscious that these creatures were intent on removing all weapons from the party. It was too unreasonable, she felt. I won't be captured again..

She stabbed at the amphibious creature in front of her.

Kamael was pretty unhappy about the Monitor attacking him, and used his newest spell to try and kill it before it killed him!
