D&D 5E Out of the Abyss IC

When the silhouette of the monitor dropped, Kamael walked up and stood by Shushaars side, looking around to verify the cavern was secure. "Mystra's taint, so much for taking them alive! What in the Nine Hells do we do now? Brinn needs urgent help and the rest of us are badly injured, on the other hand it seems like several got away and will likely be back soon with reinforcements! Do we try and go after the runners? Do we retreat and give up on getting Stool to his home, or do we press forward and try to get around Slubludop before the alarm goes up?"

While waiting for the others responses, Kamael bends over and starts searching the remains of the monitor. The earthen hand rumbles as it disperses back into the ground.

OOC:
Eeeww, nice description of the monitor & kuo-toa deaths, CB!

Raza Thulcandra

Raza hurried over to the ledge and scuttled up the side to Brinn's supine form. She quickly checked him to see if the breath of life still lingered. He still lived but teetered on the edge of death. He was strong and would most likely live but with the Mother Night's permission and Raza's aid survival would be more sure. With a muttered prayer Raza placed her hands on either side of his face and let healing power surge into his body.

Satisfied that he would survive a little while longer, Raza rocked back on her heels and looked over at Kamael. She squelched the bitter, accusatory words she wanted to say. "We get away. Too late now to surrender nicely and expect any sort of helpful or even neutral reception. We've killed their soldiers and that is not usually forgiven. Nor can we stand against a city's might. Gather your possessions; we'll have to move quickly to avoid being caught."

Ce'rek woke to the slapping of webbed feet battering at full tilt down the passageway. Earlier, Ce'rek's clever eyes had found a crevice in the rock wall, into which he'd cunningly shimmied a few hours earlier. He'd slept, his first unmolested rest in four days, and felt better for it. Reaching for his weapon, Ce'rek held his breath and counted. One. One creature barreled down the passage. Ce'rek heard nothing more for long moments. Just as he was about to stand and peer out into the passageway, however, his keen ears picked up more sound. Two more. Flying fast, too. The distinct slapping sound gave away the creature's type. Kuo-toa. And he'd counted three fleeing at top speed. His senses pricked. He'd seen the band yesterday, there'd been eight in all, seven grunts and one lightning summoner. Where were the other five, then?

OOC: I know you're at a conference, Wrex, but here's your intro. If the party takes off before you have a chance to post, Ce'rek could always elect to track them.

She had missed terribly, stumbled over the edge, and heard a squelch. Then there was silence - the battle was over, and she was nowhere near where she should be to be helpful. As she sensed the surviving enemy fleeing (including the two she had just avoided), she again scaled the wall, if only to see the direction in which they might have run.

[[Up the ladder at I 13-14? East, along the upper level, at P-S 14? I presume the former]]

If she sees anyone, she will pursue and attack, but her main goal is to get a sense of where they went.

Assuming there is no one to pursue, she approaches any bodies, and does a quick scan and body survey, before descending to the monitor. It is only then that she becomes fully alerted to the bad state Brinn is in. She doesn't want to embarrass him, but gives him a light [[casting the cantrip close too him, so that he is better illuminated]] and places a hand on his shoulder for a few deliberate seconds. She says nothing.

When she sees Kamael she nods, recognizing that he is safe.

"Not the result we want, no," she says, "but we have learned a good deal. It is better to have struggled here than to have struggled in the koa-toa city itself without our weapons."

[sblock=mistake] We have also learned that there are additional tunnels just above us -- we didn't know that, and now that we do it gives us both an additional reason to be cautious, but also possibly an additional means to help us escape."

She pauses. "I'd like to go up and investigate the route I think they went along. I'll be careful and I wan't go far, but I think we should know if it is a viable route for us to travel."

[[proposing to clamber up I 13-14 and beyond, assuming that's the way she thinks they escaped. Others may join.]][/sblock]

Kamael searched the kuo-toa monitor and recovered a clay medallion hanging from a leather thong around the creature's neck. The medallion had the imprint of a trident crossed by a pair of lightning bolts. When he touched it, however, it didn't have a magical aura. Up atop the ledge, Raza spied a trident discarded by the monitor. Turvey picked up the smooth glass orb and, scrambling up the ledge, handed it silently to Raza. The glass was unmarred by the fire. Kago shifted in place to adjust the straps on his gear and when he did, he noticed a pile of small rucksacks in the more open cavern to the west. A slashed net lay at his feet, and an intact one lay just a few feet further.

Stool was quick to huddle into Brinn's side. Brinn sensed Stool best when the myconid sprout was within thirty feet. For the second time this day, the sprout gave off a cloud of spores. Brinn had learned over the intervening six days that the spores were linked to Stool's ability to communicate. He heard Stool clearest when within thirty feet of the sproutling, for an hour or so after Stool gave off his thrice daily poof of spores. A blast of emotion washed over the link; Stool was grateful to see Brinn return, even if the monk was bloodied.

Solace looked for the fleeing kuo-toa, deciding immediately they'd darted down the stone steps on the back side of the ledge (I13-14), then high tailed it to the west. While the cavern opened up at the bottom of the stairs, her good eyesight quickly discerned a narrow passageway twisting toward the west. Toward Sloobludop. More, she heard the patter of feet leading away from the direction, close enough to give meaningful chase if she so desired.

OOC: The trident has stats per the PHB. Pinging Kobold Stew in case you decide you want Solace to go after the fleeing kuo-toa. Solace can hear them but not see them.

(no, Solace won't run off on her own. If this is a viable approach we may choose it, but this emerges from my own earlier mistake. Safe, and stay alive!)

Well, this was interesting. Ce'rek slowly climbed out of the crevice and moved forward. He stalked, listening ahead. From the way those fishmen had run, something had just trounced them. He thought he heard voices ahead. He moved forward slowly, hoping his superior eyesight would allow him to see anything up ahead before they saw him.

At the back of his mind, he thought about following the Kuo-Toa. Anyone powerful enough to defeat that party would be more than a match for him. Or they'd weakened. Or they were weakened drow. He grinned. This may be easy pickings.

Ce'rek padded forward on cat feet into the passageway. A quarter mile ahead the tunnel he was in---carved by water worming through rock long ago--yielded to a wider expanse of a cavern with a dry floor made of sandstone. Ce'rek flattened himself against the passageway wall and did nothing other than listen for a long moment. He could see nothing, not without venturing a look that would require a peep, but he heard voices speaking in the common tongue. Surface-dwellers.

OOC: If you decide, Wrex, to have Ce'rek take a look to the east toward the sounds he's heard, please provide a Stealth roll. Whatever the result is will be the DC of the opposed Passive Perception check that I intend to grant to Kago and Solace (the only two in position to be able to observe someone approaching from the west).
