This I agree with. I think I read too quickly and just thought you were complaining about people taking too long on their turns. my bad.
No problem.
The main game killer(for me anyway) is scheduling issues. The way I see it when we all get together to do this thing we all agreed to get together and do…we should all be paying attention.

Obviously sometimes special considerations must be made for various attention disorders or trips to the potty, but in general everyone should be on board with keeping things moving.

It’s all a matter of perspective.
If we’re all supposed to respect one another; paying attention to the best of your ability isn’t too much to ask.
Sure, and I respect the players at the online tables I'm running enough that if there's a slow response, there's some issue other than inattention.

How to deal with slow responses and what to do with people who aren’t paying attention are separate issues.

My comment was for people who don’t pay attention. Which was then followed up with allowing for other issues.

You then called me names. Which one of us is lacking respect here?

This was the entirety of what I was responding to ...
No pushing required…be ready or we move on. 😎
... and I thought I gave that about as much respect as it deserved. Your later posts have in fact indicated that you're not such a hardcase as you first pretended. I'm clearly a bit more ... relaxed and maybe understanding about people occasionally being slow to respond, but especially if you're running in-person, or even with cameras on, the contexts are very different.

It was my understanding that the OP was about keeping players engaged in games that are happening in real time as stated in the final sentence of the post:

" Do you think a game can still be engaging and axciting even with a relatively slow real world table pace? How do you feel about players that don't stay engaged? What are your solutions for such issues?"

My solution for unengaged players was that if you skip them and they even notice, maybe the next time it is there turn they will pay attention. I'm not sure why you keep going on about online technical difficulties.
Regardless of what's what, it's my understanding that calling people names (even when you sugar coat it) is against the boards behavior policies. So lets both stay in our lanes and on topic.

Seems as though if people really are having trouble staying engaged during long, slow turns, the obvious options are to speed things up somehow--which probably involves playing a different game, or maybe running a smaller table--or figuring out a way to keep combat engaging for the people who aren't ... on-turn, so to speak. I haven't had a big problem with obvious inattention at either of the five-player tables I'm DMing, so maybe things at those tables are interesting enough for people they're at least paying attention. What I'm doing that makes it so, I'm not entirely sure, but I do know that it's not because I'm skipping people who don't react quickly enough for my tastes.

Not paying attention and fiddling with your phone etc is not the same as paying attention and taking your time to work things out.

I’m all for everyone working together to optimize their actions but if you want to watch YouTube or play candy crush…stay home.
Would it blow your mind to learn that people can both be fiddling with their phones and paying attention?
