Paladin/Monk for a One-Shot

Baron Opal

First Post
I want to make a Quai Chang Caine (sp?) type character for a one shot coming up next week and we get 12 levels and 88k worth of gear. I was thinking of a paladin / monk multiclass.

No armor, wields a staff.

I'm thinking Monk 7 / Paladin 5. Attack-wise that would give me a +10 BAB.

Normal attack routine: +10 / +5
Flurry of blows: +9 / +9 / +4
I would get staff damage on the first hit, the rest would be unarmed.

Add TWF: +8 / +8 / +3 (No point to this since I have flurry, is there?)
Flurry + TWF: +7 / +7 / +7 / +2
I would get staff damage on the first two hits, the rest would be unarmed.

Is this right?

You can flurry with a staff, but unarmed strikes are generally superior with a larger damage die, albeit with problems (ie cost) in enchanting them.

A staff only really works for a monk when you get a single attack in the round and get to use it two-handed to get the 1.5x Str bonus to damage.

Personally, I wouldn't take Paladin past 3rd level, unless you desperately want access to Turn Undead (at 4th) to power some Divine feats and your bonus 0-level paladin spells. That would also allow you to take Monk levels up to 9th, which reduces the FoB penalty (to 0), improves speed by a further 10ft, and grants Improved Evasion.

According to the FAQ (mind you, I'm no fan of that document), you can combine TWF with FoB. Your Attack bonus won't be worth squat, but it can be useful.

Attacks would be (no Str or other mods, just BAB and associated penalties):

Normal: +9/+4
FoB: +9/+9/+4
FoB + TWF: +7/+7/+7/+2
FoB + ITWF: +7/+7/+7/+2/-3

Damage would be 1x Str bonus on all strikes.

Mmmmm. On second thoughts, there are some funny things around damage with TWF and FoB with special monk weapons... Best search for a related thread (use Google for non-members) or wait for Hypersmurf to come along and explain it better.

For feats, I would recommend Stunning Fist (monk bonus), Power Attack (human bonus), Improved Grapple (1), Combat Reflexes (monk 2 bonus), Two-Weapon Fighting (3rd), Improved Disarm (monk 6 bonus), Weakening Touch (6), Improved Two Weapon Fighting (9), ? (12).

Improved Disarm seems the obvious bonus for 6th given the use of a two-handed weapon.

Weakening Touch (Complete Warrior) is a useful feat for weakening tough opponents that have awesome Fort saves meaning your Stunning Fist has little chance to work.

Have a look at the Ascetic Knight feat... but I think that one was for armored monk/pals.
Which reminds me, there is that other feat (in Comp Adventurer?) that allows a monk to use Cha in place of Wis for the various abilities.

Nonono, she will have to wield a katana, wear blue, and take the Stunning Fist feat. Then Miko will lose her powers for going insane and murdering her liege lord, and be well on the to Blackguard!

(*cough* sorry, couldn't resist. *flees* : )

If you're looking for a PrC (& you haven't asked it, but...), I would suggest either the sacred fist from Complete Divine (not sure of the paladin levels needed to enter, & it's inclusion precludes the use of a staff) or one (forget the name) from Faiths of Eberron (for the Silver Flame, but if the DM allows it, you s/b able to change flavor text).

Why Paladin 5? If you want to take advantage of feats like Divine Might, you only need Paladin 4. And if you're not going that route, you might as well stop at Paladin 3.

I was thinking of paladin 5 for the extra smite evil and paladin spells. I'll have two spells to cast, and bless weapon looks really cool. Particularly with a Monk's Belt backing it up. BTW, why is an Amulet of Mighty Blows so expensive?

Unfortunately, I don't have most of the splatbooks yet, just Complete Arcane. This character is playing against type for me, actually. So, Ascetic Knight probably isn't available to me as I don't believe that the DM has it either.

And, you! Yes, you IndyPendant! Watch that snark, mister! :p :D
(I knew someone would bring up the main resident of Fallsville.)
