PCs are supposed to be able to stand up to deities?

I thought these rules were introduced so PCs and deities could interact or even fight? By the new rules in Deities & Demigods, and deity of at least DR 6 could qipe out ANY "mortal" PCs because that's the prerequisite for Life and Death. Technically, ANY deity can have Hand of Death. Both powers have NO SAVE and NO WAY TO RESIST. What's up with that?

Or how about Annihilating Strike, a.k.a. Super Coup De Gras? No PC could make that saving throw without a 20!

I'm all for deities having lots of power, but with THIS much power, even a Lesser Deity would be impossible for PCs to beat at ANY level!

Isn't that why they are dieties? Doesn't seem very godlike that any lowly mortal could kill them :) I think if any of my characters ever was asked to fight a god, they'd probably be laughing so hard they couldn't spit out the word no.

depends on the dieties in your world. FR has at least one dietie who once was mortal and then pimp slapped some god to become a god, in worlds like that way over the top powers which no mortal could stand against don't work.

Me I prefer gods to be in the near omnipotent levels where you kill pcs with gm fiat if they are dumb enough to atack them.

Go after a diety that doesn't have this power. Go on an epic quest to find or do something that nutuelizes this power. The possibilities are endless. But killing a god should not be easy. And with what's in D&Dg it never will be. :D

When epic levels eventually comes out, then I can really see the ability to kill gods. I even have a sword that I will make a quest item once my chars are at higher than lvl 20. Basically, by level 40, a group of adventurers, if they aren't already doing something a bit more realistic, should be able to take on a lower level god, with the appropriate artifacts in hand, and what not.

See the subject...

"PCs are supposed to be able to stand up to deities?"

The answer is...

"No." (Duh.)

If divine power were so easy to come by, why wouldn't all of FR's iconic characters be Gods? Hmmmm?

:p

I agree to wait for EpicLevelHandbook but IMC, PCs who walk into Olympus and try to put the smackdown on Zeus deserve what they get.

Death Ward doesn't save you? They sure sound like Death effects to me, as does Annihilating Strike.

There are stats for gods, so you can kill them.

So much for the theory. Of course you have to be incredibly powerful before you can take on a deity that is at least a minor power. Just having as much class levels as the god in question won't save your hide, no sir!

But I would start small, taking on a quasipower or demigod first. Running up on a "real" god as soon as you turn epic is as suicidal as going to the lowest layer of baator and shouting "yo, Asmodius, you sissy, yer mommy wears combat boots!" You'll need significant power to be able to survive in a fight against anything bigger than a demipower. And I think no mortal can possibly slay a greater power!

I was under the impression (via WotC_Ted) that there was a section for handling deities as supra-omni beings that PC's could never "smack down" regardless of epic level rules or not. As such, it's completely up to the DM wether or not deific beings can be slain or godhood can be achieved.

I, personally, go with the "no way in Baator" approach; But the other option is clearly, well, an available option.

I don't know anything that can make the save it Thor hits him. A Fort save over 400 is a bit rough for anyone.

I still don't know why they didn't make a natural 20 a auto save in the errata.
