Same I was told in and out was heaven on Earth too and it’s was just ok.
Whataburger was that way for me when I went to Texas last year for a work conference. I kept hearing how it was so amazing and friends made it a point of stressing I HAD to try Whataburger when they heard I was going to San Antonio because it was the best thing ever and it was ok.. I guess? 🤷‍♂️

My theory is that its not the chicken, its the sauce (I was seriously unimpressed--I'd rather have Popeye's any day--but again, I'm a plain food guy and don't do most sauces).
With sauce it is good, but if the sauce is required for the chicken to be good, it's not good chicken. Season your chicken and your breading, people!

As a Californian, I am legally required to be skeptical of Texas, but visiting Texas and eating anything other than barbecue or Tex-Mex seems crazy to me.

Seriously, when you have racks of slow cooked beef ribs that weigh as much as a small child, why would you go for anything else?

I'm a Popeye's once a week guy. It might not be the best chicken but the "spicy" has just a little extra kick that I like, and it's consistent across two countries. At my local place I don't even have to tell them my order, anymore, and they put it on as I'm walking up to the door.

Well, except for the really crappy one that I went to in Federal Way, Washington, on my last trip. The batter wasn't the usual crispy, it took almost an hour to get it, in a virtually empty shop, and when i got my order it was 10 tenders and fries, instead of the tenders, fries, and 'slaw that I ordered. if I hadn't already paid, I'd have walked out.

In the Texas-California food comparison, I'll defend California Mexican food any day.

BBQ though--I surrender the field.

I'll take their spicy stripes, mashed potatoes and biscuit any day of the week really; other than, again, not something I should eat regularly.

Where biscuits are concerned I'll take Hardy's/Carl's Junior, but you sort of have to give that to a place that posts the name of the "biscuit chef" next to the register. I did, however, recently try Popeye's "Cajun Gravy" and it's a crime they don't do poutine.
