Seriously: rage against the HOA. On principle.

The lack of a HOA was mandatory for us. When we were shopping around for a realtor, I told potential candidates that a HOA was a deal-breaker, we wouldn't buy a property if it came shackled to a homeowner's association. All but one of them looked at me like I was out of my mind.
So, as counterpoint, the HOA where I live isn't so bad, though there are some holdovers in the bylaws from the 1960s that are definitely classist and probably racist. That's not an argument that you should have ditched your principle, I get the sense the HOA here is something like an outlier; and I've never tried to research what an HOA is like, so I can't suggest anyone should do that, either.

like a lot of things in life HOA are different from place to place, some are good and some are over the top bad. You only hear about them when the bad ones make the news.

The problem with them in a lot of places is the degree to which the law restrains them is, shall we say, varied. Which means they're a strong vector for petty power plays by those in charge.

The problem they have is that they have too much power for a position with very little accountability. In my country they are a thing, but it is either a more informal affair or a formal one with limited power -restricting usage of facilities, gates, or some non-essential services-. An association with power so large that they control and give maintenance to private roads, private services and can dictate what you do in your home down to the number of potted plants on top of having the ability to drown people in fees, fines, and late fees tot he point they can drive them into homelessness is unheard of and unthinkable.

If they are classist and from the 1960's they are almost certainly racist; the two were inextricably linked, absolutely be design, and especially related to housing policies from the mid-century.

That is a super-cool car, but if Tom Morello lives in a completely generic housing development like that, I am going to need to lie down somewhere. Dude should at least be in a cool house in the Los Feliz hills.
He lives in the Valley, Laurel Canyon, married with a couple of kids. It is funny when heroes become middle aged.

My classic is newer, though a lot of people are fanatics about them, saying they are the best ever made: 1999 GMC Sierra 2500 SLT 4x4 3 Door, 6.0 300 hp LS, Black Leather interior. It is definitely fun to drive, very comfortable.

Love the indigo, I still do truck stuff with it.

The problem with HOAs, by and large, is who is sitting on the board. If the board is comprised of people who want to be exclusionary, insular, bureaucratic, pick your adjective, then that’s the kind of HOA you’ll experience. We’ve had both kinds living where we’re at. Luckily, the folks who liked to walk the neighborhood looking to cite their neighbors for every little thing because they thought they were the guardians of all that was beautiful and light eventually pissed off enough people that they got voted out.
