Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

My beef with HOAs is that they artificially inflate mortgage payments in Certain neighborhoods, so that Certain people can't buy houses there. It's illegal to discriminate based on race, religion, etc., but HOAs offer a convenient (and legal) workaround.

Sure, everyone smiles and winks and talks about mowing and security patrols and tree trimming, but they all know the real purpose of the HOA. They know exactly what they're doing.

Call them out on it.

Gladly, we don't have HOAs in Quebec. No one would accept that kind go authority coming from another neighbour or the extra layer of 'government'. If there is a problem, talk to your neighbour first. Then, you can file a complaint at the Burrough's service desk if the problem is not resolved.

Edit: The market and the city evaluation control the price of houses. You can't prevent anyone from buying a house your neighbourhood. It's against the Canadian and Quebec charter of individual rights.

I'm fascinated by so many people not blocking someone whom everyone is arguing with in every thread he posts in. What makes you think that, this time, it's going to be a worthwhile interaction?

The problem with them in a lot of places is the degree to which the law restrains them is, shall we say, varied. Which means they're a strong vector for petty power plays by those in charge.
I’ve handled most of the interactions with our HOA. Some of the issues were definitely due to petty people flexing their muscles. I handled them with carefully rated correspondence that hinted my position was strong, without being antagonistic. Think Teddy Roosevelt.

So far, I’m undefeated. But the worst potential confrontation still looms: we’re considering installing a solar power array, and those panels are the #1 flashpoint for HOA battles.
