Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Oh, Reddit. You sure love your hyperbole.

Look. If a game is consistently outselling all other games...

...and if more people consistently play it, more often than all other games...

...and if the game has been around so long that its name has become synonymous with the entire hobby...

...and if there are dozens of live-play programs for that game at any given moment, all over the world...

... I'm just saying, maybe it's actually NOT the "worst game ever." It's probably fine. Maybe it's just not your cup of tea?

Branding and advertising have no impact, this is 100% an informed response to the quality of the game design (in each iteration).

Presuming a thing is awesome because it is popular (which the post you're responding to did not do) is the same fallacy as presuming it's terrible because it's popular, yes. On the other hand, if a lot of people are really enjoying it, maybe it's not as bad as all that, eh?

And that's pretty much the vibe in certain places on Reddit.

Me: "Just let people enjoy things, sheesh."

Reddit: "Well they shouldn't enjoy it!"
Reddit: "But too many people enjoy it!"
Reddit: "But the wrong people enjoy it!"
Reddit: "I don't want people to enjoy it!"
Etc.

There's a reason I hang out here most, and only rarely visit the D&D subreddits.

Zeno: What kind of music do you like? I'm kind of a Swifite.

Achilles: A SWIFTIE! You loser. She's ... ugh. OMG. She's popular. Do you know why sheep like you listen to her? Because of her brand. You have no taste. You probably hate music. If you ever actually thought about music, you wouldn't like Taylor Swift because she sucks. You only like Taylor Swift because she's popular.

Zeno: Oh, okay. That's ... that's a lot. I just like what I like. What do you like?

Achilles: Listen up, old man. I'm on the avant garde of music. I only listen to and play experimental music. Because I have spent the time to know what I like!

Zeno: ...okay. So, um, Philip Glass?

Achilles: HA HA! No. He's, like, old and stuff.

Zeno: Laurie Anderson?

Achilles: Of course not.

Zeno: You got me. What do you like?

Achilles: Punk rock. You know, the music that is on the avant garde!

Zeno: ....okay? The Heartwells? Maple Hill? No Plan?

Achilles: Who? No. Avant Garde! The Clash! The Sex Pistols! The Buzzcocks! OY!

Zeno: ....I don't get it. Weren't those bands from, like, a long time ago? How could they still be considered avant garde? Wouldn't it be, I dunno, Nancy Mounir?

Achilles: Bruh. Do you even listen, bruh? Do you even listen? I'm not talking about the cutting edge, I'm talking about the bleeding edge! Which ended when I stopped paying attention.

Zeno: ...I think you were put in this world to punish me for my sins, Achilles.

If it wasn't for Reddit, I would have never learned the 80ish hours I've spent so far playing Mario Kart World was in fact not spent enjoying the game and in reality it is unplayable trash.
