I think pedantry can be a form of trolling, but I don't think it always is trolling. I certainly have encountered forms of trolling that emphatically weren't pedantry.
I actually respect a good bout of pedantry. Details matter, and if we're going to spend weeks in a thread we might as well get detailed.
But only if if the pedantry is actually done well. If you're bad at it, or unfair about it, it's definitely a fast track to trolling. The type of pendantry where someone wants to ruleslawyer their own powergaming but gets annoyed when someone else's turn takes too long? That's just a jerk to play with. And the type of pedantry where someone wants to play linguistic games until they can claim Star Wars isn't sci-fi? You might as well be trying to redefine "straight" and "curvy" to prove flat earth ideology.
