A friend of mine used to go on holiday in a monastery to get away from the world for a while. She wasn't even specifically Catholic, but found the isolation refreshing.

Most monasteries won’t let women stay overnight on their premises. Do you recall which one it was?

There's a lot to say about Catholicism, but the church knows how to design the heck out of sacred spaces.

I’m a lifelong practicing Catholic, and I agree.

But one of my favorite sacred spaces (in the USA) is a small Presbyterian chapel near my house. I went to a wedding there, and it was small, and generally dimly lit- mostly by small windows, relatively low on the walls.

But behind the altar was a simple, large (10’x15’ or so) cross of darkly stained wood. It was illuminated by light from a highly placed skylight, accented with a halo of recessed spotlights. The effect was amazingly effective.

All this talk about DIY house projects hits too close to home. My electric dry wet stopped heating so I took it apart. Ordered new heating element. Tuned the motor and then decided to buy a new belt because th e old one is frayed.

Taking a peak at the cost of a new dryer made all that seem like a bargain!

I've got a belts and rollers kit sitting on my kitchen table right now for the same reason. Put in a new dishwasher last week under the same logic. Disposal is next.

I think that the difference is origin, rather than effect. The former tends to come from condescension, whereas the latter is simple baiting. As you say, however, the first can be used as the second.
