I used to think I was pretty smart, but six years of engineering school cured me of that nonsense. Now I know that I'm competent.

And honestly, it's for the best. If you're building a bridge or whatever, and you're given a choice between an engineer that knows he's competent, and an engineer who thinks he's smart...well, it's not much of a choice.

I am trying to focus on competence and craftsmanship in all aspects of my life now, rather than trying to be a genius artist, or whatever.

A great woodworker doesn't sit around, waiting for lightning to strike: He gets to work making a damned good table.

Smart is for scientists, who are trying to figure out new stuff, or combining old stuff in novel and interesting ways. Competent is for engineers, who are the ones building/designing stuff that's actually meant to be used, and needs to have safety margins and stuff like that.
