I really don’t get this one.

Every post is a personal opinion or experience, not a universal fact for all time. Insisting every post be prefaced with, “This is just my opinion…” is pointlessly redundant and tone policing.

It’s typically followed up by the utterly stupid phrase, “Well, you didn’t say it was your opinion, so…”

I shouldn’t have to tell people water’s wet either, but here we are.

I'd buy that more if some of the same people did not continue to discuss it like it was self-evident that their take was the better way to go, and people with different attitudes were a problem. So, no, unless phrased to make it clear, I'm not going to assume people are just presenting it as personal taste; I've seen too many people who it became clear were doing the opposite (and then would try to claim they just were doing it as taste when their last ten posts make no sense if that was the case).

The issue I take with it is that while these are opinions, they are speaking in a manner that suggests (implies? outright states?) they are more than opinion. And the author of these posts is not ignorant of this--they know that their tone and word choices are leading the reader, they know they are crossing the line. And that's the whole point: they can then claim that all misunderstanding lies on the reader. Certainly not on them.

Similar to the "can't you tell a joke when you hear one?"

And I disagree. That misunderstanding is a 50/50 proposition.

I'd buy that if the listener had as much control over the information as the speaker. They don't. Yes, the listener can misinterpret things, but they lack the ability to do clarification by themselves; the speaker doesn't.

At least.

"You must supply the context I refuse to acknowledge despite it being the safest assumption in existence next to water is wet."

Every post is someone's experience or opinion. Regardless of rhetoric. If you refuse to acknowledge that without an explicit statement, that's akin to pretending to be surprised that water's wet.

But again, some speakers don't seem to think not only that its just an opinion, but a matter of taste. That's abundantly clear from talking to them for more than an exchange or two. And that attitude absolutely deserves pushback.

I will admit its sometimes darkly amusing to read a thread where someone really wants to have the last word no matter what. Its even more amusing when they clearly can't admit it (i.e. tell someone else they should drop a conversation when they, themselves aren't willing to).

I seem to recall one of the earths on Sliders were they spent an episode on an earth that stopped advancing tech wise after the dropping of the a-bombs. It naturally didn't go into any more details than that but I'm pretty sure of of the forumites here would like that world.
