Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Mine's not sexy - 2018 VW Golf. It is just the first time in 20 years or more that we bought a car for me, rather than my wife getting a newer car, and my taking the old one.
I've only ever bought one used vehicle in my life. It was a BMW K75RT touring motorcycle that had been a factory demonstrator. They gave me a 3 year warranty on it and with the way it went through speakers on the sound system, it needed it.

The last car I bought was a 1999 Saturn SL2. I bought it brand-new, and it was the only vehicle that I have ever owned. In 2008, I gave it to my ex-wife in the divorce and she promptly totaled it with a DUI.

I haven't owned a vehicle since. I live in downtown Portland where everything is 10 minutes away on foot or by bus/streetcar/light rail. For out of town trips and weekend getaways, I'll use a car-sharing app like Zipcar. SO MUCH CHEAPER than a car + gas + insurance + etc., and I never have to worry about parking or someone stealing my catalytic convertor.

My car is a 2009 Honda CRV. Which I bought recertified in 2012. It's showing its age, but still works great. I like my wife's Dodge Journey, which has a lot of bells and whistles mine lacks, her's being a much newer car. But I'm thinking I might replace mine with a newer model wig m when it's time to get a new one; I've been really fond of it. It beat the pants off of the Hyundai Elantra I had before; that thing was in the shop on a monthly basis the last four years I owned it.

Part of the catalyst for my purchase of a new car was all of those bells and whistles. On my last trip to Seattle I got a brand new Nissan Sentra as my rental. I found Android Auto to be incredibly useful, once I got the hang of it. I also, however, learned that I wouldn't be buying a Nisan Sentra. The idea of putting the navigation screen in the middle of the console, so far below the driver's line of sight, was just ludicrous. It also had the turning radius of a garbage truck.

Although some of the features in newer cars are super-handy, I really miss being able to reach over without looking and just press a button or turn a knob. Now I have to navigate a menu while driving. Who thought this was a good idea? In what way is this an improvement? I have ADD - this is deadly! Many's the drive where I had to pull over repeatedly to get something the way I need it. Yeesh.

PREACH!

Seriously, I know that I have my own idiosyncratic preferences ... I will never convince any large group of people that stick is the only way to drive ... but this?

I don't want a giant touch screen to do something as basic as change the AC or volume. This is so much worse than knobs and buttons and levers- which are tactile.

Yes, when we are all in self-driving cars mandated by our robot AI overlords, FINE. But we are not there yet.

I drive a manual '07 Accent hatchback with janky electrical that causes things to go on or off at random, no matter how the buttons or knobs are set. To turn the AC or radio on or off, I basically just have to punch the console, Han Solo-style.

I had an '86 olds' Tornado that was one of the early adventures in digital dash. Everything was connected to a single system. Stereo, AC, Heat, even MPH and gas level! My slap was more like the Delorean tho.

“I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain. One always finds one’s burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night-filled mountain, in itself, forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”
