I just texted this to one of my players and he responded.

"Hmmm. This is interesting. Well, bones are made of calcium. Calcium is a metal....does this mean heat metal works?"

You guys see what I have to put up with? 🤦‍♂️

In 5e you have to see the metal, so, not until you peel off the meat, at which point heating it would be moot in terms of combat effectiveness.
Also, if it you could heat metal on compounds that contain metal atoms, you could just boil their blood right away. Like Adam X the X-Treme!

If one is going to play pedantic games, one must play by the rules, as technically correct as you can manage - you have to see their blood in order to target it.

But, if you want to get gross... hydrogen is also a metal, and that means you can boil the water in their eyeballs.
