Not here, thankfully.

No, those LLMs aren’t actually thinking. They’re not minds. They spit out a word based on the percentages. Nothing more.

Edit: to add some context, it’s amusing how bad it can be at just spitting out a response on incredibly simple tasks. It eventually got the right answer, but three tries?

This reminds me of a chat with a bunch of friends from long time ago. One of us was inquiring whether an absent common friend had found a job since his Ph.D. defense was coming up.

"Yes, he found a postdoc in the US"
"Do you remember where?"
"The university with an S. The famous one"
"Stanford?"
"No."
"Syracuse?"
"No."
"Santa Cruz?"
"No."
"..."
"..."
"Princeton?"
"That's the one!"

No LLM was involved in the conversation.

Yep, people can be dumb and make mistakes sometimes. And LLMs also can be dumb and make mistakes. That in no way means LLMs have a mind and are actually thinking. They spit out words based on percentages derived from their training data. There’s no cognition.

Apropos of nothing. . . It was was 21 years ago next month that I retired from being an ENWorld mod
