Harlan Ellison played essentially a caricature of himself in Scooby Doo! Mysteries Incorporated (2010-2013) that made it clear that at least at that point we was capable of laughing at himself.

Also bonus: it's a damn good Scooby Doo show in general
Didn't he write essentially a self-caricature in "The New York Review of Bird?"

(I don't know how to feel that I was able to pull that short story title out of deep storage, even if it seemed to take forever.)

What I find wrong about everyone in [this forum] are their opinions about how things should be. What if instead of how things should be, we discussed all the possibilities of how things could be?

Also, gonna admit, part of the problem.

As I sit here working, my new Yeti coffee mug is making occasional squeaking noises. Not all the time. Just once in a while. Just at the edge of hearing. Was driving me mental trying to figure out what the hairy heck that sound was.

Ellison was associated with SEVERAL TV series. Besides Starlost, he wrote for Star Trek, The Outer Limits, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and others. And apparently, had disputes with more than one show’s production team.

On Babylon 5 he's credited as a "Creative Consultant", or something similarly vague, and his job was to be a cranky old bastard and tell JMS when he thought something sucked...

One thing I saw referred to him as a "continuity consultant." He also appeared, briefly, as a Psi Cop in the show.

He also did some voice acting. Right after they break off from Earth, they reboot the station systems and in doing so accidentally activate an AI that was supposed to be able to run things but were apparently too disagreeable, so it got shut down. Ellison plays the AI voice.

Harlan's vast talent ensured that he continued to get work, and his personality ensured that the work was in short supply and not commensurate to his talent.
