My wife has fallen down the rabbit hole of watching Indian melodramas on Netflix. I will be listening with half an ear while I'm on the computer and hear them slide from Hindi (I think) into perfect English and back, without breaking stride.

It took me a moment the first time it happened to go "oh, that's right, imperialism" and understand why Indians would pepper their language with English phrases at random times.

My wife's late grandmother was Bengali and watched Bengali language soaps. Although I can't say for certain as I rarely sat down to watch with her, these almost never switched into English.

Now I wonder which ones are more over the top: American soap operas or

Telenovela( Latin America.),dizi (Turkey), serial (India), teleserye (Philippines), lakorn (Thailand), teleromanzo (Italy), téléroman (Canada, specifically Quebec), K-drama (South Korea), J-drama (Japan), C-drama (China) and sinetron (Indonesia).

And naturally Studio C made a couple of parodies

Look, no offence to US soaps, but I don't think they're in the running for over the toppest. Not as a collective. Indiviudal ones might rank.. e.g. the oft mentioned but rarely seen* Passions.

Aussie soaps are no more ott. In fact they tend to glorify the mundane.
