Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Since we've moved on to chicken chains, I'll mention Bojangles recently opened their first location in the state, right in my town. They are pretty good, and have replaced the once-a-week Popeyes for us in the RealAlHazred household. But the Bo-berry Biscuits are great! At least, they are when they're fresh; if you leave them in the fridge overnight and have them the next day, they're merely good.

You can freeze and reheat bread fairly easily. I don’t know if it would work for biscuits. Wrap it in tinfoil and bake at 300°F for 20 minutes. Bread comes out as if it were fresh.

I’m of the opinion that it’s really, really hard to screw up a burger and what separates these places are the fries or onion rings.

It wasn’t that In-N-Out made any mistakes. It’s that they didn’t have options I prefer.

Part of the thing to remember about In-N-Out is that, nowadays, it's comparable or sometimes less than McDonald's. It's competing with them (they all started in the same area) and trounces other drive-thru burgers.

I wasn’t expecting gourmet burgers. My benchmarks going in were Whataburger, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Five Guys, and Burger King (sort of in that order).

So I cared less about the $$$ than what the options were. And while I enjoy burgers like those In-N-Out offered, they’re not my go-to. The lack of menu options disappointed me, not the food. And I can get similar burgers much closer to home.

I guess its better than the trend of chicken finger places (Raising Canes, Dave's Hot Chicken, etc.) -‑ yuck.

I’m more of a dark meat chicken guy myself, so I’m not exactly looking for chicken fingers/strips very often. The ones at RC seem better cooked than most others but definitely need a dipping sauce of some kind.

DHC just opened a couple locations near me. Didn’t know they were another strip joint*. Now I know what they are, my curiosity has diminished.

The classic chicken strip basket. It’s chic Fila I’ll never understand.

Chic-Fil-A has been my favorite commercial chicken sandwich since I was part of a focus group taste-testing in a mall in Colorado back in 1978 or so*. A little ketchup (about the only time I use that condiment) and some black pepper and I’m happy.

HOWEVER, I’ve noticed their other stuff on their menu has declined in quality, including their tea & lemonade. Once, both were strong & flavorful, almost enough for me to seek them out independently of the sandwiches. But the last few times, both the tea and the lemonade have been only marginally more flavorful than water. My sample size is small- I only eat there a few times a year- but the same problem existed at each of the different locations I’ve visited.

So right now, Popeye’s has been selling my go-to chicken sandwich for the last 18 months or so.

It tastes completely unseasoned to me. I may be one of those salt monsters from Star Trek.

That WAS me. I used to salt my McDonalds fries. I’d salt my dinner as I was passing the shaker to others in a Pavlovian fashion.

Then my doc diagnosed me as the most sodium dependent hypertensive he’d seen in 40 years of practice. I had to SERIOUSLY dial things back.

I'm hardly a food snob, but I've become pickier with age and with prices of even "cheap" fast food rising so much, and the availability of a good number convenient food trucks for roughly comparable prices and convenience, I just find am less and less interested in most fast-food chains. Hmmm...I can go get a burger or I can go get a fusion soul food/Mexican spicy blackened catfish taco.

I try to spend my money with the locals when I can. I get breakfast at a Vietnamese place near my barber every 2 weeks, right before my haircut.

Jack in the Box was my favorite in the western half of the US.

The ONLY thing I get at JitB is the Breakfast Jack, and I have yet to find a better version of that simple sandwich available for even 2x the cost, much less a comparable price. The closest competitor is Denny’s Moons Over My Hammy.

Just have to like a buttery burger. I frequent the JitB near the SeaTac airport, when I'm in Seattle.

Eh, maybe it's the icing that makes it tricky. The biscuit part is, indeed, fine after that treatment.
