I often wonder, how people can so plainly miss the point of a given piece of work, or just dramatically misunderstand what is going on right in front of them.

Willful ignorance along with selective vision/listening and a complete lack of empathy.

It helps to remember that in human cognition, emotional responses to stimuli generally come first, rational responses come later. Our rational responses are then generally filtered to choose one that fits that emotional response.

This will confuse us when our own emotional responses do not match someone else's - we think they "missed the point", when really they have a different point we don't know about.

I assure you, when we're having a discussion and I put my fingers in my ears and start screaming, "I CAN'T HEAR YOU! NYAH NYAH NYAH!" it's my entirely logical response to your points and in no way constitutes an embarrassment to the species, contrary to the reports in the newspapers.
