Yeah, I never read a series back to back. I always slide in at least one other book in between them.
If it's, say, a planned--and executed--trilogy, I'll generally treat that as one story. If it's like indefinite series fiction I'll either skip it or just grab whatever new-to-me books I find, and read them as I find them, mixed in with whatever other books I'm reading. If it's a planned trilogy (or other finite series) that's not finished yet, I won't read it.

The issue with later augments isn't a bug of The Federation, it's a feature. That's what happens when you don't treat people like Petri Dishes that you're willing to burn 10,000 of, to get one 'perfect' result.

The issue is that what they should have been doing is addressing the already extent augment genome they had. Instead, random people keep taking stabs ad new ones and that's what the later augments showed.

I mean, bluntly, the overall medical technology of the Federation was better by far in the DS9 period when Khan's kin were created. I don't believe for a moment that trying to work on eliminating the defect couldn't have been handled properly, and we know from the example of one descendent it isn't impossible. But they're so paranoid of touching the fire that instead they have people doing biohacking on the sly instead, leading to situations where for every Julian Bashir you have four attempts with much more problematic psychosocial problems.

Essentially, I don't think avoiding the technology completely has been benign in the setting; its probably made it more likely they'll get another Eugenics War situation at some point because someone will get augmented on the sly, not like the fact they've had to hide and how others who've had it happened are treated, and decided the solution is to Take Matters In Hand.
