Just one, but that was all it took.

I think I’m good at both; I’ve done each exclusively* for at least a decade.Weirdly, in over 40 years of playing and running RPGs with lots of people I've yet to meet a single person who's actually good at both. A lot of people online say they're good at both, but I've never actually seen it in the real world.

This seems like one of those times a lot of the differences in opinion come down to the fact that people don't all define role play the same way. I have a friend who would insist he's good at both, and several people who have played with him would agree, because he'll come up with a voice for the character and put some thought into their personality. But I noticed that whenever playing that role would negatively impact the character, that personality would vanish and they'd consistently take whatever course of action seemed the best from a 3rd person view of the situation with information the character wouldn't have. To me, that's not good RP but it seems a lot of people disagree.Weirdly, in over 40 years of playing and running RPGs with lots of people I've yet to meet a single person who's actually good at both. It's not quite the hot subject of debate that it once was.I'm still waiting to use antidisestablishmentarianism in a sentence, organically.
That's where I am, too. In the end, one takes priority. And it's (almost) always optimization. The player who's built an optimization monster might have a few scenes where they RP really, really well...but when faced with a situation where they have to pick one or the other, they'll (almost) always pick optimization over RP. You can't serve two masters and all that. It's like multitasking. People think they can do it and are great at it, but every bit of research shows the literal opposite. You don't do both well, you do both really badly. This seems like one of those times a lot of the differences in opinion come down to the fact that people don't all define role play the same way.
