There needs to be a way to leave private notes to yourself about other posters, to help avoid having the same arguments every six months until one of you dies of old age.

Equally useful would be a note that pops up every time I start writing a thread-post saying, "Is this really worth your time and effort? No, seriously, is it? I mean it, is this worth your time and effort?"

It's a balancing act. Are they SO irritating that it's worth missing the occasional insight? Then block away. Make the boards a better and less frustrating place for YOU.
I do think it's generally a good idea to avoid being petty or stubbornly and excessively prickly in your blocks. But I block pretty freely now based on how irritated other posters make me on a consistent basis and it improves ENWorld's environment for me.
