It is almost time to turn in and recharge for the night. Today has been calm and even joyful at times. Things must be going my way because this showed up in my feed randomly and it is the perfect capstone for my day. Enjoy the joy.

I confess to getting so deep down the rabbit hole of trying to find a relevant reviewer once that I lost the thread and sent the invite to one of the several people down the list authors. I noticed it about a minute after I hit send and recalled it. :-/
I’ve been frustrated before by the fact that some of my favourite journals will not give explicit rules for what is or isn’t a conflict of interest in nominating reviewers. Can I have worked or published with them before: if so, is there a time limit? What if we’re mates but haven’t published together? What if they were kinda mean to me at a conference, but failed to swear undying enmity? We want to avoid the situation where folks just nominate their mates and rubber-stamp each others’ papers, but the most rigorous application of conflict of interest rules can leave you with almost no viable reviewers.

The journals I've AE'd for and most of the ones I submit to don't give a space for recommending reviewers... but it does take a lot of time to make sure there aren't any obvious conflicts with the ones I pick (or if there is that there are enough others without any). I wonder if some colleagues have had some trouble the other way about the enmity. I don't know how I'd tell that as an AE until the reviews come back and are off the rails.
