Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

It makes me cringe when folks enter a discussion about any RPG as if it is D&D. I know I am guilty of saying “it’s all D&D to me!” But I mean that in a broad sense of a brand name used in a generic way, not because I don’t know the differences in rules, approach to play, player expectation, GM authority, and overall goal of play that exist across a range of games.

It is for this reason you will never catch me talking about PBtA games for example. I have a general understanding of them but have never played one and am not about to judge one based on my understanding of D&D.

Heck sometimes even two people both playing D&D at different tables are playing different games and cannot seem to find a common ground to talk about it.

Despite the tech getting, i am glad that we have memes like this to remind of what it looked like

Now I am imagining someone who approaches all card games as if they were Magic.

Imagine sitting down to play bridge and asking the other players if they still play with Mana Burn. 😂

Part of the problem there is just how many CCGs ended up broadly copying MtG mechanics. It blurs the boundaries; the same is true for all of the not-D&D games that were just "D&D with a few house rules". Technically, original RuneQuest, Palladium Fantasy, and so on -- all just D&D with a few other mechanics. Heck, even Iron Crown Enterprises, the creators of RoleMaster, their original game supplement was meant to be used with D&D.

I am not familiar enough with non MtG CCGs but when it comes to RPGs, I’d be more sympathetic if it were still 1986 or maybe even 1996. But definitely not in 2026.

You don’t have to be familiar with other games, you just have to be wise enough to understand that your own experience is insufficient to have an informed opinion.
