D&D 5E Psionics Speculation Based On The Monster Manual

Holy thread necro! :)

Look for the word "magical."

Neither Dark One's Blessing or any of the Paladin auras have that word.

There's probably some room for DM interpretation, there, but a strict reading would indicate that those things aren't magical.

Meanwhile, psionics in the MM is, AFAICT, always described as "magical" even if it's not outright spellcasting.

But, a future psionic class might not be "magical" in all or any of it's features, despite them being psionic. That'd be novel, but there's room!

That was sarcasm. The abilities I mentioned cannot be dispelled by RAW and RAI. The real key one would look for would be duplication of a spell, while ignoring things that do not duplicate a spell 100%. The developers have clearly stated this countless times.

Psionics has historically been described as something other than magic, much the same way KI is something other than magic. Did you ever play 2nd ed or 4th ed? Clearly described as something other than magic, which is something they are clearly brining back for this edition.

Some 3.x ed sources do refer to it as magic mainly as an option. It makes sense as Psionics was poorly handled in that edition and was set up like a spell casting class and many effects duplicated spells in some way.

Dune also influenced Rawn's Dragon Prince and Dragon Star novels (the fight scene between the chosen son with knives and desert setting is pretty telling), but boy does it ring psionics AND fantasy.. no spaceships or aliens in her "version" of Dune :)

Yea it trips me out to notice the influence in random places. Why I always say Dune is the go to material for Psionics among other things.
