Question about Special Attacks and Standard Actions

Marimmar@Home

First Post
So I sit there analyzing my rogue's possibilities wondering if the following would be possible:

To get multiple attacks my rogue has to take full-round action. Feint is described under the special attacks section of the combat chapter. This leads me to believe that it's an attack, which means that my rogue could make a feint with his first attack and follow up with a sneak attack with his second attack. Since my rogue wields two short swords he could thus make two feints and two sneak attacks, doesn't he?

Any opions are welcome! :)

Using a skill is a standard action, not a substitute for an attack. If your rogue feints in combat, it's only on his next turn that he'll reap the benefits (unless he has a feat or an ability that lets him feint as a move-equivalent action, or even a free action - See the Invisible Blade PrC in Complete Warrior).

As Altamont mentioned, using a skill is a standard action, so normally you couldn't attack at all after a feint. The Improved Feint feat in the PH allows you to feint as a move action, so you could feint and then attack once. But I am not aware of any way that you could attack more than once with this--full attack is always a full-round action, and you can't use a skill during the same round as a full attack.

The invisible blade prc in Complete Warrior eventually gains the ability to feint as a free action.

So I cannot use a Skill during a full-attack, but what about feats or special attacks other than that that require a standard action, can I execute these during my full-attack?

Sorry Marimmar... you'll have to be a little more specific with your proposed tactics etc.

But you can assume almost anything takes a std. action to use unless it specifically says otherwise, so nothing else could be initiated during the same round as you full attack with both of your shortswords.

The only things you can substitute an attack for are:
- a trip attempt
- a disarm attempt
- a grapple attempt

Well to be more specific, I'd like to know about Awesome Blow (might be interesting when I DM again) and Aid Another for attacks that will miss anyway like iterative off-hand attacks.

Awesome Blow is only useable as a std. action.

AWESOME BLOW
[GENERAL, FIGHTER]

Prerequisites: Str 25, Power Attack, Improved Bull Rush, size Large or larger.
Benefit: As a standard action, the creature may choose to subtract 4 from its melee attack roll and deliver an awesome blow. If the creature hits a corporeal opponent smaller than itself with an awesome blow, its opponent must succeed on a Reflex save (DC = damage dealt) or be knocked flying 10 feet in a direction of the attacking creature’s choice and fall prone. The attacking creature can only push the opponent in a straight line, and the opponent can’t move closer to the attacking creature than the square it started in. If an obstacle prevents the completion of the opponent’s move, the opponent and the obstacle each take 1d6 points of damage, and the opponent stops in the space adjacent to the obstacle.

And Aid Other is also only a std. action.

AID ANOTHER

In melee combat, you can help a friend attack or defend by distracting or interfering with an opponent. If you’re in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action. You make an attack roll against AC 10. If you succeed, your friend gains either a +2 bonus on his next attack roll against that opponent or a +2 bonus to AC against that opponent’s next attack (your choice), as long as that attack comes before the beginning of your next turn. Multiple characters can aid the same friend, and similar bonuses stack. You can also use this standard action to help a friend in other ways, such as when he is affected by a spell, or to assist another character’s skill check.
