Real Astral Diamonds!

I'm not touching that thing with a 10 (million) foot pole.

Don't you guys read any D&D? If it's a star, it's probably sentient, aberrant and wants to destroy the universe!

Leave well enough alone, folks... You don't want to stir its star spawn.
Aye, even my dwarven lust for treasure can't compel me to join that foolhardy expedition.

THE STARS ARE RIGHT!!

Read some years ago some Russian researchers workngon carbon 60, made carbon60 diamonds...what they didn't expect was for it to be *magnetic*
ultimate space craft skin, or perhaps, ICBM body, so that research kind of seems to have disappeared...

point being, it had a melting point of 1200C, was not only hardest substance known (harder than normal diamonds) it's TOUGHER than about anything else known, too (it's C60), plus since it's magnetic it would form a magnetosphere and keep out charged particles (essential for spacecraft and a major problem at present).
Also conducts electricity.

now, imagine that as a D&D weapon/armour material! ;)

Oh and DeBers keeps a stockpile of 10,000 TONS of diamonds: diamonds below 4 carats or un-coloured, or without a star aren't worth much, in reality. Big con game.
Rubies some emeralds now they are rare.
best though is opals as, far as I am aware, it's still impossible to manufacture them and DAMN are they gorgeous.
Only ever seen one diamond that looked good, 4 carat almost square, antique. had a fire that literally hurt the eyes. :)

Let's see:

10 billion trillion trillion carats
= 2 trillion trillion trillion mg (2*10^36 mg)
= 2*10^30 kg
= 4.4*10^30 lb.

If this is really astral diamond we're talking about here, at 500 standard-sized astral diamonds to the pound, this is enough for 8.8*10^27 astral diamonds, each worth 10,000 gp. That's 8.8*10^31 gp, or 88 million trillion trillion gp, if I got all my math right!

Only in D&D economy. I think diamond might become pretty worthless sometime before you have an amount that is more massive than the planet you live on...and then there's the problem with the 8.8*10^31 gp....

:)

Oh no, we only have 5 billion years left? They better hurry up on that virtual table and the rest of the tools--lest we never see it. :p

I'm not going on the trip, but when you get back, I'll appraise it for you.

*wrings hands evilly, thinking about swapping it out with a counterfeit during the evaluation*

In other thoughts...this ought to be incorporated into Starlock fluff...NOW!

Erm....actually, the universe makes the Tomb of Horrors look like a playschool. Gamma radiation, x-rays, supernovas, black holes, and the airless void in-between it all, that thing ain't worth it. Talk about an RBDM....

Yeah, when in just about every parsec there's a "Green Devil Face" trap the size of the earth...

The cosmos is truly a killer DM.
