Rogue's Sneak Attack

The Heavy Fortification armor is what really ticked me off when I was playing a rogue.

Yeah, but how often does that come up? If the DM kept throwing foes at you w/ Heavy Fort armor... Well... As long as your GROUP wins the battle, you'll be rich in no time!

When we fight undead, constructs, elementals, and planets, I'm on my own (we also have a bugiler)

Goodness me, I'd hate to see the hit points of those planets! Are they normal, earth-sized ones, or gas giants too?

It came up surprisingly often. Sure, we could try and sell it, but for a good chunk of the campaign, the DM was laboring under the "no one sells magic items" theory.

Eventually, he came to his senses. But...have you ever tried to sell armor that a beholder was wearing? It's rather difficult.

Your DM used BEHOLDERS in heavy fortification armour????

How would they put it on with no limbs? Wouldn't it interfere with the eye rays?

The last adventure our high level group did (we made it to 23rd level!) was an adventure published in Dungeon Magazine called "The Lich Queen's Beloved".

In it was a beholder fitted with "Eye Tyrant Armor". Spoiler =>
Not only is it magical full plate +4, it gives the beholder a +4 Str bonus and has 4 mechanical arms which can weild weapons! cost 119,500gp, FWIW.

So yes, beholders can wear armor.

For the record, whe 3.0 first came out I (and some of the DMs in my group) were certain that mulitple Sneak Attacks per round were way out of hand. The Rogue could do more damage than a maxxed out Fighter!

With more actual play experience we concluded that a big iterative Sneak Attack goodness was not easily accomplished without some substantial measure of risk.

Other than Blink and Greater Invisiblity, the only reliable means of achieving iterative SA is to Flank. Getting that Flank require either good teamwork (in which the bounty is well-earned) or risk -- if you can Full Attack it, it can Full Attack you.

At the levels of play that Blink and Greater Invisibility do not represent substantial investment on the part of the entire party are levels where many opponents could easily counter with fogs or Blur, if you care to. Remember that a Potion of Blur costs a "whopping" 150 gp. That they do not is usually because they spent a precious Action on an even nastier buff.

Fabulous annihilations of an opponent by a Rogue who goes for big SAs are going to happen. Good.

Not long into my 3e experience at middle levels, I saw a buffed out 3.0 Core-only 8th level Fighter do 129 damage in a single round. The idea that a buffed and cheesed out TWF Hasted Rogue might land 20d6+20 damage in a lucky round just stopped looking so scary anymore.
