RPGing and Alcohol.

Some groups allow drinking during gaming, others believe that it is a hinderance to the gaming experience and shouldn't be allowed.

What are the norms for your group or what would you say to a gamer who wanted to drink while gaming?

I don't think there's anything wrong with alcohol, if it's in moderation. I usually have a light beer or two while DMing, for instance.

Shut up, you lot.

Depends on what's at hand and when we're playing.

I got no problems with it, though gaming does get in the way of drinking.

Back when I had a pad I could do both at, I used to love a good gin and tonic pre game and gin on the rocks pre-boss fight.

I've occasionally done drinking games and role-playing. That can be pretty fun.

What I'd love though, would be rules for good mini-games within the DnD game for drinking contests.

We've got a drunken master in our group, and rolling contested fortitude saves is just not enough fun.

Have you checked out Tournaments, Fairs and Taverns?

Moderation is the key. When I was younger we had one session where a couple of the PC's were drinking and ended making really bad decisions not only for themselves, but that affected the entire group. I made a moratorium on drinking during games I ran after that. But I've been in campaigns where the occasional beverage might be consumed, and is not done to a degree that could impair anyone's judgement.

i think it really has all to do with the group you are playing in.

in a recent game i played in, my character was a mercenary who loved nothing more then whores, ale, and fighting.

thusly, when i would play this character i loved to have three or four pints. afterall, havinga constant string of whores at the table to improve my roleplaying ability would make my wife angry!;)

I've been playing in pub-based groups for years, and it doesn't usually cause problems*, though I wouldn't necessarily run stuff that requires deep thought in such an environment.... When I'm reffing, though, I tend to switch to the soft stuff.

* Though a few months ago, while I was away, one of my current groups had a problem which led to a player being expelled. I wasn't a witness, but it sounds to have been at least alcohol-exacerbated.

We only have one or two drinkers in our games (they also smoke), and of those, none of them drink while we game. It's one of those things where they've decided to do one or the other, but have problems doing both.

I learned a valuable lesson back in my teens: never game with someone who is Hammered. No one gets anything done. But as long as they are in control of their mental faculties, there's little harm done. The trick is trying to convince someone who isn't in control, but who beleives they are, that they shouldn't be gaming.
