Saving email?

neg

Explorer
So after my work PC crashed completely, I am up and running. Our tech guys couldn't salvage any files or email. Luckily I backed up about 3 weeks before the crash, but all the email is gone for good. Almost 2 years of business correspondence gone.

So my questions is, now that my company has given us memory sticks (great invention) to use to back up files, is it possible to backup email that is on your laptop hard drive? If so how? I am not a computer expert, but I can navigate around a bit.

Opening Windows Explorer and searching Outlook, I don't see a saved email folder that I could just drop over to the memory stick. Would it be saved elsewhere besides Outlook?

If you consider trying to help me...speak very slowly with your tech speak...much appreciated! :heh:

SO the first question is are you using the full Outlook program or just Outlook Express. If you are using the full Outlook, backup is a snap!

Do a search on your computer for inbox.dbx

When your search finds on it, right-click and choose 'Open containing folder'

This is the folder which should have a dbx file for each of your Outlook Express folders. Make sure that Outlook Express isn't open and copy the files onto your memory stick as a backup.

Cheers

Well, I closed out Outlook Express even and tried the search, but I simply don't come up with the file.

We are on a network system, and I am a remote user, but I am almost positive that I have set email folders so that I save it down to the hard drive instead of letting it sit on the network.

I have tried a bunch of different search functions. I just can seem to find it. Any suggestions?

What version of Outlook are you using? If it's Outlook 2000 or earlier then try looking for a .pst file.

Also your system may be set to hide system and program files. That's set under the windows explorer "Tools" then "Folder Options" then Click on the "View" tab.

I do have .pst files. I think it is just a matter to figure out where they are and which on has all the email in it. Likely the largest .pst file right? Or should there be a seperate .pst file for each folder I have created on the hard drive?

Thanks for the links ssampier, I will look into the Outlook Express data backup link.
