Sculpting Project Nomination Thread

Howdy!

nyrf and I have been discussing creating a single concept miniature for folks to sculpt. I would like some ideas on what the subject of the sculpt should be. It needs to be flexible enough to let folks use their own artistic visions. The idea would be for sculptors to post their works in progress (WIP) on the thread - if they can.

Then on the deadline, everyone can send me their creation. I will make RTV molds of everyone's minis and cast pewter copies for all the sculptors of all the sculpts. I would ask that sculptors include a small ($4.00) fee to cover the cost of postage, but if you cannot swing it just send me the sculpt and I'll pick up the postage.

This is a project we want a lot of first time sculptors in - we want everyone to try this. To whet your appetite check out nyrf's sculpting tips thread. Even if you are profoundly disappointed in your work at least you will get a custom mini designed by our own nyrf and a lesser creation by yours truly!

Please post your subject ideas here and in a couple of weeks or so I will post a poll.

Hey Pogre,
Hey Everyone. I'm in
Sorry to have dropped off the planet. A family emergency and then catching up at work have left me pretty far behind.

Nyrfherdr's Ideas:
Titans
Gargantuan Dragons
A slime, ooze, jelly or mold
Unusual familiars: Flamingo, Possum, Flobber Worm
Clockwork Creature
Pirate
Ninja
Dinosaur

Game ON!

Greetings!

Love the idea. Were you planning on sticking to one scale? In the usual 28-30mm range I believe some of the larger things may get a bit unweildy, gagantuan dragons, titans and such (sorry Nyrfherdr). I would think the cost may be too much on our generous host to reproduce and ship such large things. I would stick to smaller sizes myself (tiny to large sized creatures).
some suggestions:

clerics (many faiths/races to represent)
orcs/goblins (I'm sure many people have a different take on these)
golems (many types and styles)
zombies(near unlimited choices)

All of these also could be used quite frequently in games.
:]

I do want to stick to 28-30 mm scale. And you are right, the larger stuff would put me in the poor house. On the other hand they are cool ideas and might be worth it - perhaps we could stick to creatures of large size and smaller for this first time out. I'm not totally against the idea nyrf - just wary ;)

The other problem with huge monsters would be I have to cut them apart in component pieces to make molds - I would feel terrible if I ruined someone's hard work doing this.

copperdragon - welcome aboard and welcome to ENWorld!

Darn! I was looking forward to all of the gargantuan options. :(

On the other hand, I was mostly being tongue-in-cheek. I guess it is too easy to be taken seriously on the boards.

I hope lots of people participate!

Another option you might want to try is instead of focusing on creatures go towards items. This may attract more first timers as they may find it easier to do.

Some options along these lines:

treasure (chests, scrolls, books, weapons, etc..)
graves ( instant graveyard if we get several people plus they could go from simple to elaborate)

I'm in. Gives me a chance and motovation to use that big tube of green stuff I have.

How about making golems, armored figures, and such. As scuplting faces scares me. :\

Excellent! Welcome!

I hear ya'! I would like a big concept to give folks some wiggle room on their sculpting designs. I think we could use a category like "wizard's inventory or something like that. That would give nyrf the freedom to show off his outstanding skills and allow some of us amateurs to dabble at a level we're comfortable at. No matter what everyone chooses - I hope we can all stretch ourselves a bit artistically and more importantly have fun learning a little!

Great suggestions btw.

More cool suggestions! On a purely personal and very greedy level I like the graveyard idea more because I already have a ton of the mastermaze treasure stuff ;)

Another idea that shouldn't scare people:

Wizard's Lab (This is pretty broad)
It could include: Alchemy equipment
Golem making machinery
Bookshelves or scrolls or piles of unidentified goo
Mechanical devices/clockwork devices
Golems, homonculus or other creations
Skeletons, zombies or other low level undead
Wizardly assistants (Igor, familars, apprentices)
Maybe the result of an experiment gone wrong
Maybe a spell result like an Elemental or something
The Wizard himself

I hope more people jump in.
(Remember that you can sculpt in Sculpey, Fimo, Super Sculpy, Magic Sculpt, A+B, Aves Apoxy Sculpt, Green Stuff and more. You can probably use some plastic too, but check with Pogre first.)

You can count me in, although now I'll have to buy sculpting tools.

Still kind of new at mini stuff though, and all the sculpting I've done is modifing mini's. But it sounds like it would fun to learn.
