Sell me a Star Trek rpg

Does anybody here play a Star Trek role playing game? If so, why the particular one you use and what are its relative merits?

The only one I own is Gurps: Prime Directive (4th ed). I don't really care for the SFB universe (it's like somebody came home from the petting zoo with ideas for 50 new races... ugh) and I don't really care for Gurps (you have 150 points to spend, you can spend your points in .5 increments, and the skill list is longer than the OED... blech).

Incidentally, by "Star Trek" I mean TOS, and not that silly later stuff.

Decipher's Trek RPG supports any era. I've played a few games with it and really enjoyed it. The system is clean and for the most part supports the Trek universe well. My only complaint with it is that chargen is a pain because the book is not organized very well. Other than that I think it's a great system for Star Trek.

FASAs STRPG was very good and you can still get it on Ebay. It is only really good for playing out the games of the early Stra Trek, up until the films but expansions can fix this.

I particularly liked the Star Trek Tactical combat simulator game for ship combats as well. I still have my copy and run a game occasionally.

I also have the decipher game but don't like the system so much.

I know the title of the first post says non-d20, but ADB did Prime Directive for D20.

Other than that, I second Ydar's suggestion of FASA's version.

Thanks,
Rich

I know virtually nothing about star trek RPGs, but I did play in one that used, I think, books from Last Unicorn Games (did I get that name right?). That was fairly enjoyable.

Meh. Having played SFB, the SFB Universe offers option for wargaming purpose.

As for 50 new races, we're about 100 short (assuming "150 member planets" in the United Federation of Planets means "150 races").

Nope, don't consider DS9 silly. With my preference for wargame, the DS9 Dominion War offer many options for playing a militaristic campaign.

I have played FASA, but I prefer LUGTrek.

How do these various systems work? I know that FASA is supposed to be a percentile system, but I don't really know much else about it, and virtually nothing about the LUG and Decipher systems.

Details would be helpful!

Decipher's CODA system is essentially d20-lite only using d6s. It is easy to learn and use. There are only 6 print books and 2 additional pdf books. It can be played with any era and is the system I like most for Star Trek.

If Decipher is d20 lite -- using 2d6 -- then LUGTrek is d6 lite.

Test Number vs. xd6 + Skill rank. Where x = attribute score (relating to the skill).

Not exactly bucket of dice, but the numbers (both dice and TN) are low to allow even the most rookie of ensign to operate their station under stressful situation (unless he's a redshirted NPC).
