My point earlier that all those contrived builds could be made better by just adding Eldritch Blast and Agonizing Blast did not mean that "DPR is all that matters."

But damage is...well, let's just say it's "occasionally useful". And if you can add a ton of damage AND survivability (because you don't have to be in melee range) for one cantrip and one invocation, then in terms of "balance" it seems like that's a no-brainer choice. You still have 7 other cantrips and 4 other invocations for fun/useful stuff. If you want to be a melee-range combatant most of the time, that can still work.

And then if you add Repelling Blast it's not adding more damage, it's adding some amazing non-damage utility, both defensively (keep them away) and offensively (push them off the bridge).

Maybe if you had titled the thread and written the introduction differently, and made this simply a fun game of "what's possible without EB?" or "Warlock build that EB isn't primary attack?", folks would have responded differently.

By "Darkness / Invisibility is damn fun," I assume you are referring to using One with Shadows
Prerequisite: 5th level
When you are in an area of dim light or darkness, you can use your action to become invisible until you move or take an action or a reaction. Which requires total stillness. I just don't see that being useful very often.
Broader. I was being all inclusive of situations such as Darkness combining with Devil's Sight to pull of interesting tricks like granting yourself advantage in melee combat, thievery, and being a scary bastard. It also makes for a great equalizer such as when the enemy has created a trap where you have disadvantage and they have advantage.

But really, do not underestimate how amazing at-will Silent Image is. You could play an entire Warlock focused on nothing but Silent Image and still contribute meaningfully the majority of the time.

Folks,

It seems I need to put in a reminder - at EN World we expect posters to show a base level of respect for each other and their opinions. If your words are dripping with sarcasm, you may find yourself getting the hairy eyeball from one of the moderating staff.

So, folks, play nice, please. Thanks.

You get to spam one spell over and over again. And over again.

Is that really any different than a fighter swinging his sword or a ranger shooting his how over and over again? Giving casters a fallback spell outside of their traditional number of uses was intended as just that so they don't end up just trying to look for a place to hide when their normal spell compliment is used.

Must all fighters attack? Must rogues sneak attack? Must wizards cast spells?
Come now. Those aren't apples-to apples. Try to stay between the goalposts. Those first two are not choices made within a class option, such as a caster choosing to know a particular spell. Because that's the argument. Your third attempt would be more apropos if you asked, "Must all 5th-level wizards know fireball"? To which I would say, "Heck no. Of course not."

And you think sacred flame is an apples to apples comparison with Erdrich blast?
