Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

Cool. I think it's interesting we are getting these expansions but as far as the core book goes it solves for me so well.

I mean Cursed Scroll 4 doesn't add a ton mechanical but man do I ever want to run/play it.

I'm just such a fan of the base game.
Right there with you. Homebrewing new monsters, etc., covers my needs at the moment. (I used my new cauldronfolk for the first time on Sunday and, even without them getting into combat with the PCs, the players were sufficiently weirded out by them, so I call that a success.)

I would like to see Kelsey's long-teased megadungeon, though, although I'll probably pick up Ave Nox at some point in the interim.

Ave Nox is awesome. I give it two big thumbs up, and an unexcted third small thumb as well.

Okay Treasure (1st level):

A treasure chest will typically have 1XP worth of treasure.

A random encounter will have a 50% chance of having treasure but not necessarily 1 XP worth.

What about when random rolling and creating a dungeon via the core book and having assigned monsters in different rooms. Are they considered "random"?

By my read:

The two categories, really, are planned encounters (typically 1 XP's worth) and wandering monsters/random encounters (which have less than that).

The Battlezoo Books look like they would add a lot of interesting options to SD and the price of $50 per book (US at least) is pretty reasonable, but releasing them all at once and bundled together seems to be too much for most. I think a staggered release would have been better, but maybe logistically this made the most sense for them?

Will probably pick up the PDFs to see if physical is worth investing in. Appreciate the art is in tune with Core the books.

I was under the impression the Battlezoo line was mostly about Pokemon-style play for D&D. Was that only one of their books?

That was only one of them, Eldamon. I have the PF2e version and it’s pretty well done. Most of their other PF2e/5e stuff is either monster books or PC ancestry options for playing as monster ancestries. I can’t speak to the 5e conversions of their previous stuff, but their PF2e stuff is really top notch material.

I am interested in seeing how their monster parts system works in Shadowdark, so I will probably eventually pick up a book after they are available next year.
