Shadowdark Shadowdark looks so good!

This version of Seer is an odd class, linking divination with blood and descent into corruption. My problem is that being a diviner could be a popular player choice but not this one!

One of the conclusions I came to with Shadowdark...although it could be equally true for other games...is that classes don't have to have unique names. "I want to play a Seer." "The one Kelsey published in Cursed Scroll?" "No, this other one I found on drivethru..." "Ok, looks good."

Where is the seer from?
This class is wonky. I'm doubting Kelsey designed it. No cap on increasing the fate die talent, permenent effects on penance table, and most players are not going to allow someone to trot off to sacrifice 9 humanoids. (I hope...) And penance table by tier instead of random. And far too many luck tokens.

If this was called "occultist" or something along those lines, I think that it would communicate the class mechanics and flavor better.

I both agree with that, and I think this class describes a kind of Seer, just not a generic Seer.

Edit: maybe a kind of Norse seer, at least of the sort (however historically in/accurate) portrayed in the Vikings tv series.

Huh. The Seer doesn't really appeal to me, but it's also not a "MASSIVE turn-off". Really it's just a Wizard who trades fewer spells known for a much lower chance of spell failure, with some flavor. What do you hate about it? The Tier 5 Penance?

The character won't live long enough to worry about that. :)
I agreed with not wanting that class in my game. One of the things I find atractive with shadowdark vs for instance DCC is that there are as far as I can see nothing that prevents low death game ala typical 5ed, while much better cattering for high death game than 5ed for those into that. The way that "Seer" is bringing in permanent character degradation only jams well with one of the styles.

Yeah I'm not a fan of penance #3.

It reminds me of the Warlock from the first cursed scroll: if your familiar dies you can permanently sacrifice 1d4 hp to get it back. That's just too punitive, in my book.

The implied self-harm slowly boiling over to full blown murder? Easy to see how that would be off-putting to decent people.

If a PC were to use it though, I think it would be a fun dynamic to play out. How much creepiness would the party allow? Maybe the Seer hides their penance for as long as they can till things start to spin out of control? Lots of fun possibilities for me.
