Sling-Staff and Sling-Sap

Greetings!

I'm trying to figure out how one might work a weapon that can be used both ranged and in melee. I've seen Tsotha-lanti from the GITP forums create a hoopak (a kender/halfling staff-sling) as a two-handed superior weapon with the following stats:

Hoopak: +2 proficiency bonus; 1d6 damage; 10/20 range; Staff, sling type; Small property

I don't know if that is really powerful enough for a superior weapon. What about a full size staff sling that works as this:

Staff-sling: +2 proficiency bonus; 1d8 damage; 10/20 range; Staff, sling type; Defensive property

Does that seem fair? What about a similar idea, but one handed:

Sap-Sling: +3 proficiency bonus; 1d6 damage; 10/20 range; Mace, sling

Anyone with the time to critique it who wants to chime in would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The defensive property is only relevant for off-hand and double weapons.

Other than that, I see no real problems. At first, I thought a melee weapon could not have range without being thrown, but there is nothing in the rules that say this.

I think it's not just the ranges, but the ranged properties that make weapons ranged. For example, I think you need a "Load (free or minor)" action for these; thrown weapons have the "(light or heavy) Thrown" property.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll take off the defensive property. Is d8 damage too much for the staff-sling? I don't think it is for the staff, but for the sling function it might be. And yes, they should all have Load (free) as the sling, good catch.
