The trouble largely came up because WotC didn't want to commit to calling it something because a new edition poisons current book sales. They said it had a working title, OneD&D, but then they said it wouldn't have a new name because it's the same ruleset- but the designers kept calling it "the revised edition" on interviews.. but the only official thing to differentiate the rulebooks as per DnDBeyond is DnD5e2014 core books vs DnD5e2024 core books.

I think people are just not agreeing on what defines an edition... which seems like something arbitrary for the creator/publisher to set. Which, in that case, it is not. But we went on for far too long without that info, so there is discourse about it.

they are calling it something, 5e, and they have done for quite some time

working title, yes, at no point was the end result not 5e however
Yup! I further explained, as above, that that is why there's discourse- because of these circumstances.

What is D&D 5e? I would answer the game created by Wotc in 2014 including the 2014 PHB,MM,DMG and rules expansions created for that game.
and you would be wrong ;) 5e is one instantiation of the D&D ruleset, it is not limited to those three books. Adding Xanathar did not change that, same for Tasha or Monsters of the Multiverse. None of these made it not 5e

Using the 2024 revision does not really change that either, it is still the same ‘rules engine’

In that sense D&D 2024e is not D&D 5e. It’s adjacent though.
in that sense Tasha’s already wasn’t 5e

It's a new edition to me, because certain core rules have been changed enough that if different players were using different PHBs at the table, there would be issues. That's why I like 5.5 or 5.24 nomenclatures; it's similar, but different enough.

There's a reason they had to release WoW Classic to play old stuff; too many changes.

Been thinking about training for camping, hiking, portaging, int he boundary waters again. Want to put together a racksack to hike around the neighborhood so I get used to a 60# sack. I should just fill a pack with RPG books for weight! Lord knows I have enough.
Think the farthest I ever walked with it was 2 miles at 40 mins according to google maps, but it seemed so much farther. I was probably hung over in 85+ degrees in mid-August. Surprised I didnt keel over in mid back stroke

Yeah there is a big square 3 mile sidewalk set around my house. Id use that as my trail. Though, ill probably wait until winter becasue I bike when the weather allows.

‘these circumstances’ being that WotC wanted to avoid calling it a new edition to not imply incompatibility and affect sales of the current edition. That is really it.

Given that it is compatible there is not really any reason to call it something other than 5e. It was marketing then (3.5), it is marketing now.

they had WotC to blame for it, and there is just a smaller crowd anyway.
Smaller than D&D for sure, but PF has a big enough crowd to make waves. Paizo has also said that PF2 has brought many more fans in for PF1 days even.

At least until I start playing. :)
Which musical instrument are you going to play with? It is a gong? I hope it is, for not only can you play one, it also doubles as a shield if the 'audience' doesn't like your music. ;)
This issue should be settled the only rational way it can be. A dance off
Two Bards doing a Bardic showdown at High Noon... 😋

It's a new edition. 5.5. While it pretty much contains the same material as the 5e PHB, it has new features, new artwork and a different layout than its' predecessor.
