So you dislike 3e...Why post here?

... or favor some other system...I am just wondering why you do it if 3e galls you so much?

i favor another edition, not system. to me Original D&D (1974) is the only true game. all the other editions are just poor imitations of the real thing.

however, that doesn't mean i don't play other editions.

ask the Jester or read my story hour on this site.

3ed is the only game around near me. :(

i keep current with whatever the latest edition is.

i even own all the 4ed HackMaster stuff. ;)

As for this love/hate 3e/d20, I could care less. As long as the discussions are civil, I don't mind.

So, some of the recent "I don't care for 3E" posters may well be part of this.

Yes, that's probably true. I've noticed also that many of these posters start out very belligerently ("Open Dome Gaming" anyone?).

I was posting for a while over at Dragonsfoot, but it was difficult to discuss 3e in the 3e forum due to the 3e bashers trying to steer the discussion into the "why 3e is inferior/isn't real or sincere D&D." I've seen people post that that has changed, so I've been meaning to check it out again. However, I got out of the habit, so I never think to do it anymore.

Anyway, I think EN World has been more accepting of fans of earlier editions than other sites have been of 3e fans, in general, from what I've seen. But, I haven't seen every site, so I could be wrong.

Well, this site is no longer "Eric Noah's 3E News". It's now more broad: "Morrus' D&D/d20 News & Reviews". Specifically, this is a "General RPG Discussion" board. So, discussing the merits and flaws of D&D 3e (an RPG) makes perfect sense.

But you know that. I think you're asking "What's the point of ranting"?

Well, it's clear that WotC reads these boards. Probably more than their own boards. It seems like the dedicated hardcore seem to post here, the casual fanboys (an apparent oxymoron) post on WotC's boards. So, to get an idea of what the critical, adult community thinks of D&D WotC looks to this site. Knowing this, a person may post negative views of 3e as a way to send a message to WotC. Or start a conversation with a WotC employee (undercover or apparent).

I think the various "What would you change about 3E" threads are good examples of message-sending threads. What's more, I suspect that some of those threads were originated by D&D's keepers.

Yeah, it is slighty curious....

Me likey 3e best of all, but I'm not exactly huuuuuge on the gaming thing for anything other than getting some stories outta my system, so I use whatever system works best for that...3e right now. ^_^

Wow....I can't believe I said I'm not huuuuuuge on the gaming thing, what with my massive collection and my deity thread, and....holy shyt! :)

I certainly agree with what Piratecat said, but I think, more often than not, that Bagpuss has the right of it. There's nothing wrong with disliking 3E, if that's your preference. Certainly, open criticism is welcome, when handled with respect to Eric's Grandmother and other posters. It is this very facet of ENWorld that endears it to so many.

However, there are also a set of posters who seem to be here purposefully for 'peeing in the pool', as it were. People who go on record as stating they don't even PLAY D&D at the current time, and spend inordinate amounts of time trying to steer threads around to arguing about the game, similar to what CH mentioned about Dragonsfoot. Sometimes it just rankles, is all.

It just seems kind of masochistic, and I was wondering why they did it. (Not that there is anything wrong with masochism, mind you...)

You sure? To me, threads like this say, "We're not a leather club! How dare you seek our derision?" (Admittedly, bruises make me uncomfortable.)

Off the top of my head, I can think of lots of reasons why some people might be masochists and post here. A few include...

- Regular beatings or no, this place is a wonderful repository of verbal abuse for any masochist.

- They may be a masochist reluctantly while preferring to be a sadist. Thus, conduits to discounts on equipment and techniques are still pertinent.

- They may be investigating masochism to see if it fits their preferences.

- They love masochism, but may not be thrilled with their present beatings. They come here to keep in touch with their feeling.

You get the idea. I would prefer that we be inclusionary, not exclusionary, and not insult folks just because masochism is or isn't their favorite recreational choice. (Tuerny, that isn't directed at you - you weren't, but I have seen it here and elsewhere. Being insulted because you happen to like a particular recreation isn't fun for anyone...unless you're a masochist! ;) )

constant bickering over at Dragonsfoot
Your in the wrong forum, my friend. There seems to be a misconception here that us Dragonsfooters are all rabid 3e bashers. Well, maybe that's true. ;) :p However, being the civil folks that we are, we've confined all of our actual rabid animals to the Edition Wars forum. Every once in awhile, one will escape but us keepers promptly chase them back to their proper habitat.

And just as a note, I was registered here and a Community Supporter of ENWorld before I joined the Dragonsfoot team, and I don't like 3e! I do like gaming, healthy discourse, the mining of ideas and all you 3etards are just so entertaining! ;) :p :D

Sorry, just couldn't help myself! Hee-hee.

Yeah, it rankles me too, especially when it seems pretty obvious. But the only ways to "defeat" this kind of twisted search for entertainment at the expense of others are either to try to genuinely engage the person without resorting to ire or indignation, or to ignore such forrays.

That wasn't true until fairly recently. I lurked and eventually posted a few times at Dragonsfoot before this change, and finally gave up, as I mentioned above. I know you're kidding, but seeing the "3tard" attitude heaped on the few people trying to have a real discussion about 3e got old very quickly. In addition, some of the recent trolls we've had here seem to have come from Dragonsfoot. I don't know how many 3e trolls hit Dragonsfoot. Still, I'm not bashing Dragonsfoot at all; I'm just saying why I gave up posting there. It really is a great place for fans of earlier editions to hang out. I will definitely give it another try.
