So you dislike 3e...Why post here?

The blind spots of some of the 3E enthusiasts on this board rival those of the older edition trolls - especially the ones who don't recognise that D&D's tropes, archetypes, norms, inspirational material, idea content and intellectual property are more important to the game than how you determine "to hit". This kind of enthusiast ascribes too much weight to hard rules as definitive proof of the worth of the game, and not enough to the softer stuff that also makes D&D D&D...again, and again, and again.

Rounser, I thought you made an incredibly intelligent statement there. Very well put Sir.

I love D20. I'm using the system as a way to hang ALL of my ideas on campaign worlds and various fantasy, supers, Sci-Fi gaming. But I think this is just because I am very comfortable with the system. I understand how it works and how to modify it.

I do not think it can cure cancer. I agree with you whole heartedly Rounser. D&D is more about the assumptions than it is about the mechanics.

I do not like Gygax. I don't mind 1E rules, just the adventures.

I have been on a site where Colpladoh/Gary Gygax has said that the "new generation" of gamers like to whine about their PC's
dying, and they should have the role up a new PC mentality.
If you do this every other game it kind of sucks. Now he would say
you have to use your head when you play these games. No s#&%t! You have to use your head to play 3E adventures too. Those old games were sometimes just about the DM stroking himself.
Pied Piper Publishing message boards is all about a bunch of 1E's
that complain about 3E. Go there to see what the legend thinks of 3E.

I know some 1E players that love 3E and even though they had fun in the 70's and 80's they say gaming now is a hell of alot better. They thought the deathtrap style adventure was usually
lame. Trap after trap after trap can suck the life out of the game.

GG likes to think of himself as above us new players. Unless we
like 1E or Legendary Adventures, or are tough enough to
play one of HIS modules.

You know I don't exactly hunt down every gygax post in existence, but I really never got that impression from his posts. I think way too many people are constantly on the defensive and see punches being thrown where all there was, was a wave.

Hello old friends. Good to see you all. No time for the backstory of my whereabouts, but I was directed to this thread from my cronies from Dragonsfoot. So, I figured I would come back to where I started and take a peek.

I have to say, when I was a heavy 3rd ed guy, I didn't like DF. There was too much bashing of 3e for my tastes. Then something happened to the server and the old board got dumped. After the mods restored the site, the new boards have been more civil by light years. Plus, the Edition Wars forum was the best idea to keep the nonsense in one place. The other forums are pretty much straight on topic, so if you want to post on the Classic D&D, or 2nd edition boards, you can pretty much expect it to remain on topic and civil. I have gone back to Basics, Basic D&D actually ;) and moderate the Classic D&D board on DF. I find it to be the easiest version of the game for me to DM, (old dog, new tricks comes to mind ;) ).

So, if you want to feel a little nostalgia for OOP versions of D&D, check out DF, and ignore the Edition Wars forum, (which BTW, I barely even read myself. Why? After years of disscussing D&D on the web, I don't care anymore what version anyone likes or dislikes, cause I know what I like at my game table. I find it a waste of time for me to beat the same old dead horse over and over which game is better, cause it is all a matter of preference. It is just a game, not a religion. Have fun with it.)

I like the Edition Wars over at Dragonsfoot for the same reason that everybody likes those barfights in movies and television - You jump in, get in a few good licks, get pounded and thrown out the plate glass window, and then pick yourself up and the guy next to you, dust each other off, and go chill over a few beers. :)

And occasionally, JUST OCCASIONALLY, someone learns something new. :D

He's right, don't blame him for laying down the truth. Trap, after trap, after trap means you have to be on your toes, and have a good thief along. That's what D&D started out as, and what it still is to me and a lot of others now. It's not a "shared storytelling experience", whatever the hell that is. It's adventure in the lost temple of an evil god, defying traps, monsters, and all other obstacles in the quest to explore it and plunder it's secrets.

I just don't appreciate someone acting like the guy who always eats all the Fritos, but doesn't bring his own food to the game, you know? ;)

Hey, that topic alone would make a good thread!

Seriously though, I had not heard about any of these Internet sites or message boards until last month when my friend PirateCat told me about them. I've now been enjoying both EN World and Dragonsfoot for several weeks, with posts on both (and also have become a Community Supporter here, prompted to do so by a post that I saw on the Dragonsfoot site).

I don't understand any of this bickering about editions. It's all D&D! The key is a good storyteller and group of people each with above average intelligence and an overactive imagination. The specific edition rules are just guidelines to help facilitate the flow of the game. We gamers are a small enough group that we should all stick together in support of the game.

Now about the food thing, I have this one player.....

Speaking as an avid OD&D player, I started posting on Eric Noah's original board after I first heard about 3E, and I've been coming here ever since. It turned out in August 2000 that I didn't care for 3E but that was no reason for me to leave... although at this point I'm pretty much a lurker!

Ahhh....

Damnit!

Is THAT what Dungeons & Dragons is?!

And here I thought it was about what I wanted it to be about....

SHOOT! Now I'm gonna have to go change my notes.

Grumble, grumble

I enjoy all 3 editions once I got use to each particlar form.
I have players who I now remember have played with me from the 1st edition.
Game play has not change much but mechanics have
