So you find a portal to a game-verse - where do you go and what do you bring?

I would go into any developed future like Traveller or Mechwarrior and take a lot of books, newspapers, and similar effects. The value of such old relics in the future would fetch thousands if not millions of credits or c-bills and set me for life, unless of course I happen to step out onto a world just when I see the dropships of Clan Wolf begin descending from the sky.....
This, if anything. I wouldn't survive ten minutes in the usual fantasy setting. Now, if I could write up a character sheet, especially past beginner/1st level, and become that character on the other side...

Yah. If the portal restats you as you go through, it is again a different question.

Ah, here it is...

For anyone interested in a decent book on this very premise, try the first of Joel Rosenberg's "Guardians of the Flame" series - The Sleeping Dragon.

Let's just say it isn't all fun and games for the heroes.

Also, IIRC, it's not exactly like the new world (of Guardians of the Flame) follows the rules of their game. Magic's real, the setting elements are real, but getting stuck with a sword is more like getting stuck with a sword in real life than losing a die+modifier's worth of life points.

Freedom City, or some similar four-color superhero universe. The laws of such places being what they are, it would be only a matter of days before I am chosen by aliens as their guardian representative, bitten by a radioactive animal or doused with electrified chemicals. Since a side effect of such is always an instant modification of your body fat to about 3% and you being no more than 30, this works out well all the way around.

I'm under no illusions about my chances of survival in any setting. I'll just open a portal to Athas and shove my annoying neighbour through.
lol!!! ;)
tie a note to his neck, give him a hand axe and a chain mail shirt, note says: "I have more, just give me gems in return!"

That reminds me of an episode of a TV show- Tales from the Crypt, Tales from the Darkside, or something similar (I can't recall which)- in which a couple had a well on their property into which they lowered things to the unknown, unseen beings at the bottom.

If they liked it, they sent gold and gems back up in the bucket, with a note along the lines of "our scientists have determined that this is _______, and it is good. Got anything else?"

If they didn't, they sent it back with a note saying expressing disapproval or some such.

The husband was controlling and abusive, but his instincts were generally good on this, so he eventually sent them some food...which they really liked. But eventually, he figured he could just go down there and rob them.

He had his wife lower him into the hole- despite her protests- dressed in his improvised battle-garb.

After a while, his wife hauled up the bucket, loaded with more gold than ever..."our scientists have determined this to be Turkey, and it is good. Got anything else?"
