Sorting out the Terminator 3: Rise of The Machines

First Post
I'm assuming that you are aware of the story thus far and you can viddy the trailer at Terminator 3 trailer

I'd like your help in sorting out what actually the new movie will be about since the ending of T2 was rather conclusive and that a nuclear war (obviously) did not break out in 1997 as promised.

1984. A terminator, and a human named Kyle Reese are sent through from the future. Kyle makes Sarah Connor pregnant and she destroys the terminator. Kyle dies. Later she gives birth to John Connor.

A scientist called Dyson finds a super-computer chip in a factory (from the old terminator Sarah destroyed). With the chip's help he manages to speed up computer development significantly, taking a huge step towards acheiving the self-aware computer SkyNet.

1991. Two terminators are sent through from the future. One of them is supposed to kill John Connor and the other one is supposed to protect him. John destroys them both as well as the super-computer chip found by Dyson. Dyson dies.

1997. SkyNet becomes self-aware and decides to exterminate man with the help of American and Russian nuclear weapons. Only there is no nuclear war. Why?

2003. John Connor is a young man and apparently in grave danger once again. Again, why?

If I got something wrong please notify me so I can update the list.

Presumably the Skynet of the original Terminator movie decided to try for the THIRD time to send someone back in time to kill JC. This is Hollywood, so it's Allowed.

If you consider the implications of T2's ending, there's no Skynet to send Arnie back to 1984, and so there no way T1 could have been made. The best thing to do when it comes to time travel paradoxes is not to think about them too seriously.

Nah. That's the lazy way out. Besides speculating of what Hollywood will think up next is a favorite past time of our generation. :)

In fact I'd wager that time has caught up with Skynet now. That is, I don't think they will do the time travel thingy over again. Moreover I think Arnold will play the human from which the T-800 was/is/will be modelled. So I guess John will try to destroy Skynet who is at this moment operating at full awareness.

I was under the impression that the 'killer' terminator was sent back for two reasons.
1) To try and kill John Conner.

2) To aid the scientest working on computer development so they can bring about skynet quickly.

It could be wrong but that's what I read somewhere.

IN T2 the T-800 lost a hand it is p[ossible that components of this hand were recovered and reverse engineered (exactly like the original posited)

OR maybe Skynet became 'self-aware' through some other means and history is repeating (only delayed)

The second is most plausible in my opinion.

Quick questions:

Is James Cameron involved in this movie? If he is, I'll take a chance and go see it.

Why didn't they get back . . . who was it, Eddie Furlong, who played John Conner in T2? Come to think of it, I haven't heard anything about that guy for years.

How is the chronology affected by the fact that the Soviet Union dissolved right after T2 came out? :)

As far as I know, Arnie is the only person from the other films to be in this one, and that makes me think that this thing must be a horrible mess.

I have the special edition DVD of "The Terminator" and when you see the love that Cameron had for that project, the fact that he isn't involved in this one is quite telling to me.
