You're right, I messed up, according to the PHB you'd get an AoO (well, unless all you did was move, and assuming you didn't go through multiple threatened squares or run). But, here's a problem:
An AoO for movement occurs AFTER the target has already moved to the destination square. (Psionics HB, p. 30, Stand Still Feat). That is, you draw the AoO for leaving a threatened square, like the PHB says and you can't really "leave" a square until you're in the next one.
I know, the Psionics rules aren't exactly a core book, but the PHB doesn't say where the AoO takes place, so it's the only clear writing I've found on this one.
But, if the AoO takes place when they've moved to a square you can't hit, how does that work? I suppose the same problem happens if you use a sword. Is it just assumed that you hit them right as they were leaving the square? And, if your weapon has Spell Storing loaded with Hold Person, does inertia just carry them into the next square or something?
It's just a logical inconsistency that annoys me.
(Minor question: if the person moves into the second square before the AoO takes place, wouldn't that mean that anything triggering on moving into the square, like traps or a Teleportation Circle, would occur before the AoO takes place?)
