Looking it up, it's not just the character--the actor is deaf, also.

Out of curiosity, for anybody who knows any sign languages, is he using a real sign language? I assume he'd be using Betazed Sign Language, so did they invent one for the show?

(I once tried to learn British Sign Language, as my mum was learning it at the time. I was 10 or something. I clearly didn't take it in though, as I remember none of it).

Shouldn't that mean they have tech that's unrecognizeable then?

It still has to be usable by meat-bags that haven't changed in the interim time. The controls still need to readable by the (we'll generalize and say) human eye, operated by the human hand. Starfleet is against genetic enhancements and that probably goes for unnecessary cybernetic implants that allow mental control of ship systems. And the audience needs to be able to understand what's going on.

I'm no expert but I recognized some of the signs being used and what articles I've seen have confirmed it was real ASL.

My wife, who is fluent in ASL, confirms that it was ASL.

Ok I’ll have to double check. If all the sign language is towards the dad than that tracks, but I thought some of the other Betazoids were using it with each other, which wouldn’t make sense

I could be wrong but to my recollection it was only conversations in which he was involved (which was most of the Betazoid conversations except the ones his daughter had in private with Caleb).

I mean, it might really be all about their deaf leader, but I wonder if that psychic shield might also come at a prize to the Betazoid telepathic abilities.

They definitely need ways to communicate non-telepathically if they are also protecting several non-Betazoid worlds. Unless those all happen to be species with psychic abilities.

I was surprised that the Betazoid brother joined the Academy. I expected the characters to be one-time deals. So we might learn even more about the Betazoids, and possibly the War College.
