"Do you listen to Gorcoloc Bithumen? Aren't they just the thok?"

In fiction, reference to cultural touchstones are there to communicate to the audience. References to culture that the audience does not know serves no useful purpose.

Buster Keaton is a reference that audiences know? Good grief, I'm almost 50 years old and I barely knew what that was.

But, yeah, I imagine it has more to do with securing rights than anything else. It would be fun to see the crew watching Ghostbusters though. :D

Note, AFAIK, the sentient computer was explained as the probe that they downloaded into the Enterprise wanting to protect the Enterprise, the same way that the probe protected itself. It's not that the Enterprise computer suddenly became sentient, it's that they downloaded a sentient program onto the computer.

I'm well aware, thanks.

I'm not finding the tactic of making emotional moments out of parting with characters we hardly know to be terribly compelling.
“Let’s give a minor character their most character development, then say goodbye” is a weird well to go back to.

Starfleet-in-exile was beautiful, though. And David Cronenberg was fantastic (as the head of future Section 31??). Tonally, this was like three episodes in one. Less cohesive than the previous episodes, esp. the last one.

Good episode overall. I just hope that they at least stick around Starfleet HQ long enough to perform a few upgrades.

Well, I think that to start with the Admiral said he intended to find new places for the crew, and was going to do a bit of a refit on the Discovery. Now, he's keeping the crew, but I'd presume he'd still do the refit.

Imagine getting a yeah old carrack or cog and putting missiles on it.

Germans kinda did it WW1 for a surface raider.

One if the ships was an 11th generation Voyager. I'm guessing they'll slap some shields on it or something and some weapons fairly fast don't think about it to hard.

So, did anyone else get the sense that:

Control may not actually be gone?
Maybe I am reading too much into it, but I just got the sense with the AI talk and creepy David Cronenburg and a few other of the pieces that there is something sinister below the surface. Especially reinforced by the Empress plot thread with Georgiou

I just came across a thread that some of the cast of Discovery have started playing D&D.
I thought people might find it interesting:
Link is Here
That is the coolest twitter thread I've read in a while!

I followed it a bit further down, and some fans made 2d20 stats for Stamets, and Rapp geeked out over it! I've really grown to love his character and love him as an actor, now it's sealed!

Do we know why they wrote the character of Nhan off the show? It's possible the actor wanted/needed to leave, and they did the best they could to give her a decent good-bye.

Airiam's exit was likely due to the original actress' developed allergy to the prosthetics and make-up . . . although by the time they killed her off, another actress was playing the role. Did she develop problems with the prosthetics also? I do like how they brought back the original actress, Sara Mitich, in a new role, the new blonde lieutenant Nilsson who just seemed to appear out of nowhere! Will the replacement (and killed off) Airiam, Hannah Cheesman, get to come back in another role also?

I liked Nhan, I was glad when she decided to jump into the future with Discovery, and now bummed she's off the ship. It was a good character moment though, and did underscore how isolated the Discovery crew is feeling jumping centuries ahead of everything and everyone they knew. Both Nhan and Saru had emotional moments when they learned their respective worlds had joined the Federation after they left the timeline.

But yeah, I really like the B-cast of Discovery, but their character development has been weak for the entire show. At least it's not as bad as season 1! Although to be fair, the original series (TOS - Those Other Scientists) crew didn't get much more development either. It would be nice if the Disco crew got the kind of attention given during the TNG/DS9/Voyager era.

Also, was that the actual USS Voyager at Federation HQ, or a successor ship with the same name!?!?
