Star Wars game with different feeling

I was thinking about running a Star Wars game but with a different feel than is presented in the movies. Do you think it is a dumb idea to run a Star Wars game with a dark gritty feeling? Do you have any comments or suggestions?

Thanks people!

Not at all. We ran a game with no jedi. We were all merchants and had to deal with what was going on. We smuggled for the rebelion, but had to suck up to the Empire. We never actually had anything happen in the movies that we were involved in. We dealt with hutts and other lowly creatures and tried to survive.

Back in the old WeG version, some of the best sessions I ever played in (I rarely DMed back then) were ones like the Han Solo or Lando Calrision series of books... no jedi, just smugglers/mercs/etc. Those could get pretty gritty. We also did a great rebelion-era one where we were all rebel guerilla fighters on an imperial world, that one was actualy very dark... but a lot of fun.

Gritty fits into the Star Wars universe very well, it's not pretty technology, it's a place where ships spark when they take damage and a droid with a blown motivator emits smoke.

The characters in places like Tattooine are worn and tired, most of them willing to walk the edge between good and evil just to make ends meet. I am playing a Dark Side campaign now, and even though I just lost one of my Jedi characters in an arena duel (it was for the semi-final round, he could have given up, but didn't...) it is a dark world in which they live, one of the combatants (A Klatooinan was being forced to fight, because his Hutt 'owner' had abducted his litter of pups and threatened to kill them if the fighter didn't excel... So the gritty is there, just pick up the detail to strike it home.

Take the material that's given you and add weather.... it's a great way to start making the world more real
