Stonefist Academy - 3.5 D&D - OOC - Recruiting Closed

If there is still recruiting afoot, I'd like to reinstate my interest in making a character.

Could I request a quick race/class summary of the current PCs to see if anything jostles my creativity? :)

Welcome back. :)

From the RG:
Lune, Male Human Cleric (jackslate45)
Silvas, Male Elf Ranger (Sphyh)
Miranda, Female Human Sorcerer (Graybeard)
Ararion, Male Elf Rogue (Dragonwriter)
Olek, Male Dwarf Fighter (Axel)

Looks like all the major bases are covered. Free reign to do something bizarre or off the wall?

Welcome Back! As stated, the RG has the party makeup on the first post, along with brief info like Axel stated. They all have a token as well, for when there are encounters, so it makes it easier to put a face to a name.

I think most of the bases are covered, so anything to help out the group would work. A meatshield would not be a bad choice, but again, anything is available to be taken.

Most characters sheets are done and verified. I am simply working on a few map creations for when they are needed. Last night was another hour or so playing with the new program and now I have Stonefist Academy all mapped and ready to go!

The quicker you can get a character up and ready, the quicker we can all start. I will have to get your tattoo concept up once your character is posted. Plus, now I don't have an ugly eyesore on the Rogues Gallery, as you can use that 'reserved' post. ;)

Lastly, to everyone. If you are intent on moving your character down a certain path, such as multi-classing/PrC, then please let me know. I like to have the character growth portrayed within the campaign. Such as a rogue also learning magic to be able to go into the Arcane Trickster PrC. I would allow some interactions with the magic users, both PC and NPC to help the rogue learn the arts.

Or if there is a certain sect or group that a PrC encompasses, I would like to have that available within the campaign to help you grow into it.

It doesn't have to be now, but down the road in game terms. Have an idea what the NEXT level would be, so that I have a full level to work anything in that I should prepare you for the next level of growth. Fair enough?

I was thinking we could use another arcane caster type actually... A single Sorceror doesn't give you the flexibility for breaking out of a super-magic locked dungeon if they also carry the can for arcane firepower. Battle Sorceror, or Warlock, or even a Mystic Theurge or thereabouts could be good value. The cleric seems to be a reasonable meat-shield type, to me at least. I don't know how he's going to be played. Still, he has a good AC and a martial weapon. Hard to go wrong with that.

The only archetype we don't seem to have is a dual-scimitar wielding Drow. Don't hate me (hate the character) if Olek grapples you and puts you in a barrel till you starve to death if you go that route though. :)

Mind you, I like simple characters personally. Complicated multi-classing and feat selection is tedious. Nothing is more satisfying than a straight half-orc Barbarian. I CHARGE AND HIT IT WITH MY AXE!! is a valid action up to and including level 20.

Im thinking of moving towards the deepwoods sniper prestige class. after the sixth level ill take a few levels in that i think. how rigid are you on the requirements? could we talk through some things via pm on that?

AFAICT, my PC will remain a Rogue. I haven't really seen any PrCs that make me go "Oooh" yet. And any other class (other than Wiz) will give me a multiclass XP penalty, as well as making me confused about the character concept. :p

... Can't... XP... :p

I'm not 'torn', but I am curious.

I play Bards. A lot. Why? Because every game that featured a Bard (me or someone else) ended very early. I DM'd a Bard character back in 2ed, but he dual-classed a bunch.

A concept I've always wanted to play is a Bard/Chameleon with perhaps 3 or 4 levels of Warlock thrown in for good measure.

Here's my issue: The character I want to play won't exist until level 8 or so. And I've done Bard soooo many times at low level. I don't want to stomp all over the Sorcerer's shtick.

I'm also considering Duskblade, as I haven't played one before and there was mention of needing some magical oomph and meat-shieldery.

In either case, the character is going to be Human (has to be for Chameleon) or Half-Elf, and I will make a female character to keep things interesting.

As players, which concept seems more interesting? Which seems more enjoyable?

Also also: Where did you guys find your character portraits?

Bards are a decent little buffer... but the good Inspire Courage boosts of which I am aware are out of this game. The bonus healing spells (later on) are helpful too, as is the ability to wield a wand if the Cleric/Druid/Ranger/Paladin is indisposed.

Warlock would give some extra arcane attacking power. My only concern with that is the unlimited-use one-trick-pony, which you may grow bored with. And there's the "Chaotic And/Or Evil"

While I would like to see another Duskblade in action, PH2 isn't on the approved list of books, AFAIK. Core + Complete series.

EDIT: I'm not too fond of the Chameleon, from the DM's perspective. They have a way of ruining any estimate of party capability regarding an encounter (social or combat). I speak from experience, running with a high-level Chameleon.

And as for the portraits, I just did a Google Image search. Dunno where Fangor found the others...

It seems that I need to clarify something. Core books are the PHB, DMG, and the Complete ___ books. (Complete Adventurer, Scoundrel, Divine, etc..)

Axel - Duskblades are nice, but I am trying to keep this core classes, and that is in the PHBII. Believe me, I like duskblades, dragon shamans, etc, but I just can't fit them in nicely with this concept. I would have to rework 30+ npcs with this in mind. Chameleon is from Races of Destiny, which I am not using either. I think the sorceress that is currently in the group, (Female Human) is leaning towards cold type spells, energy substitution possibly to remove ability so cast any fire spells. Having you as the fire side of spells would be interesting to see play out, as you would be opposite of what she is. Just a thought.

Sphyh - Deepwood Sniper is from Masters of the Wild. Again, I am trying to keep this to the books listed above. Order of the Bow Initiate, Highland Stalker, etc are acceptable alternatives. Or we could look at what is appealing for the Deepwood Stalker and see how we can incorporate a variation on abilities through the tattoo.

For everyone else, if you see something you like on a PrC that is not from an accepted book, let me know what is appealing about the PrC and I will see about the possibility of the tattoo enabling a variation of those powers/abilities at higher levels.

Thanks, as I have never seen one played and was wondering about the abilities. Good to know someone has at least seen it in action.

I have hundreds of images found from all over the place. I have a few computers with folders just for various images, and I find something based on the description of the character, give them a few, 3 to 5 sample images and ask what they think they would like to represent their character. I have a template saved to convert them to tokens, so it's not bad at all.

Like for Ararion, I would have given choices like these and cropped out the face as the token, resized what I have to, etc..:

Just examples of choices I give out. I usually already have tokens made, as I keep the non selected ones to use for enemies, npc's, etc..
